Jury service exemption?

I have just had a letter calling me up for jury service smack bang in the middle of the six weeks holidays. I'm already extremely fatigued and im hanging on (as a part time secondary teacher) for the holidays so i can rest and recuperate as best I can with two kids at home. Im also their childcare in the holidays. The thought of having a 45 minute commute every day and figuring out who will look after the kids is already sent my stress levels rocketing. Anyone know or have any experience of being exempt?

A few people from the PMRGCA forum have been exempt. Point out that the fatigue may well impair your judgement and that you cannot guarantee you will be well enough. If you are on corticosteroids they are accepted as a get out for impairment of judgement.

I was called for jury service last year and like you, immediately put me into a panic. I wrote back and said that along with having lupus I’m also photosensitive so unable to sit under artificial light for any length of time. Thankfully I received a letter back saying I am exempt.Good luck and I’m sure you will be excused. Xx

You don't say where you are based but the normal way is to speak to your doctor. They will be able to write you an exemption letter and need to put a time period on it. You may then be recalled after that period expires.

Hi - I had a letter for jury service many years ago.

It mentioned mental health problems and as I'd been ill with post natal depression I simply wrote to them explaining that I'd been very ill. I didnt hear from them again and I didnt do jury service.

Contact them, let them know what a problem it would be for you to go. I don't think you'll have any problems, its not mandatory.

Hi,

I got letter from GP to say I'm unreliable as a juror due to lupus flares being unpredictable, I received letter back from courts to say I had been removed from recall list's, having previously done 3!! Jury services, of course that was before lupus appeared... Good luck xx
