Lupus rash

Hello, I’m new here and I would like to ask about lupus rash. After a year of different diagnosis my GP and rheumatologist think I might have a lupus. I’m going to see rheumatologist 18/11. I have joint pain, swelling in hands, Raynauds and ANA 1:320. Recently my skin on my face changed, it’s kind of raised a bit and it does get very red after shower or when I just get too hot. Otherwise is not very visible on my face, only when I get hot, could that be a lupus rash or is lupus rash red at all times? Thank you :)

Hi Lulka 👋

I’m recently diagnosed with SLE this year, at the milder/earlier end of the spectrum. I’ve also been having these transient malar type flushes that you describe (Rather than a rash) with slight change in my skin. They appear after showers or when I’m run down/ having flare ups. I’ve also had a really bad red scaly rash around my eyes.

The dermatologist has taken a look and confirmed the eye rash is linked to Lupus & sun sensitivity (I live in the Middle East where it’s hard to avoid sun) and they think it’s likely the cheek flushing a sign of It too.

I can’t comment on your situation but perhaps take some photos to your next rheumatology apt to see what they think and hope it helps to know someone else has a similar experience!

Take care and good luck in your next appointment.

Thank you so much Gem! I have taken photos of my rash, so I will show that to the rheumatologist on my next appointment.

Good luck to you too and take care :)

Hi Lulka. Make sure you take pictures of the rash to show rheumatology. They may send you to dermatology for further evaluation. It’s hard to say if a rash is lupus related or not without clinical context and a battery of labs. I have what you have as well but it became permanent after a while until I started treatment. Plaquenil has helped so much with the face rash. My skin couldn’t be better. I also felt vitamin D helped as well since my levels were low. My skin, hair and nails are now much improved.

Hope this helps. Sending hugs your way. ❤️ xx

Thank you so much! I have pictures and I will show them to the rheumatologist. My GP have seen the photos already and she thinks it’s butterfly rash..but I have to wait for rheumatologist next month.

All the best :) Thanks 😊
