Diet for lupus

Has anyone found a particular diet that helps with their lupus. I am dairy and red meat intolerant. I am trying to find the best diet to give me as much energy as possible and reduce some pain.

Hi Panda91, I find that removing foods from my diet that can cause inflammation helps me to feel more comfortable and energised overall. The “nightshades” are well known inflammatory foods and these include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and potato skins. Keeping gluten and grains to a minimum, along with sugary foods and drinks. I hope this helps x

Hi Panda91 ,

There isn't a single diet that is recommended for people with lupus, although many people find that it is an important part of their lifestyle to manage and that it can help improve their overall well-being.

You can read a bit more about this in our article here - lupusuk.org.uk/diet-and-hea...

It is important to be vigilant about what advice you take regarding diet. There are quite a lot of unscrupulous people out there just trying to sell books/subscriptions. You should also consider that lupus is very varied and what works for one person may not work for another, or could be potentially harmful.

I was very tired/low energy and I realized I was dehydrated and not drinking enough water. Too little water is hard on kidneys and can make you feel weak and dizzy. So hydration is as important as food to stay healthy.

Try to eat healthy food and avoid junk food. get enough protein because low protein can also make you tired.

I went paleo and it seems to work for me - mostly meat, fish, veg and fruit. I think it works because I react to loads of foods such as grains, nightshades, sugar, caffeine in particular. However, we all have different needs. For some, veganism has worked. Functional nutritionists can help you identify problematic foodstuffs and plan a healthy diet, but a lot of it is trial and error (if something is obviously causing a reaction, don't eat it).

From the medics point of view, eliminating processed sugars, processed foods, chemicals and gluten is often suggested. That might be a place to start and see if you feel any better!

I tried sooooo many diets and honestly they dont work. Just eat varied and healthy and avoid stuff that boosts you immune system, there is a list of stuff lupus folks should not eat. All other diets in my opinion don't work but i also dont want to discourage you to tey as some might work for you, we are all different

Hello. I have lots of I tolerances and have found the Fodmap diet very helpful but it isn't meant to be followed long term. You may also like 'The gut Dr' Megan Rossi she has some sensible advice re the importance of looking after the gut and helping the good bacteria thrive.
