UTI’s -Topical Oestrogen

Found this bit of info particularly the bladder part, which I found quite interesting, after been advised/now prescribed Topical oestrogen cream.

Oestrogen deficiency of the menopause often causes significant effects on the vagina and bladder, leading to vaginal dryness, and discomfort during sex. This may have an adverse effect on sexual interest, response, sexual function, relationships and quality of life, as well as bladder problems. Surveys have shown that 45% to 63% of postmenopausal women have experienced vulvovaginal symptoms, most commonly vaginal dryness[1]. However, symptoms are under-reported and under-treated.

This is so true. Women are embarrassed to tell their OB/Gyn that it is painful to have any penetration or it burns when they urinate. Dryness/atrophy causes stress and tremendously reduces quality of life for postmenopausal women. Topical estrogens are easy to prescribe and works well for some women.

Even worse, the medical community has shunned HRT because prior studies said it increased heart disease in postmenopausal women. Come to find out, the study was flawed without proper controls. Menopause lasts an average of 5-6 years. It’s effects on women could easily be mitigated with HRT. Not a great option for those who have an increased risk of blood clots but for all other women, it could really do a world of good if a proper study was conducted.

If only women problems were taken just as seriously as erectile dysfunction and low testosterone, we’d be light years ahead.

Thank you for this. I am definitely going to discuss topical oestrogen with my GP to see if it helps the awful burning and irritation. I use vaginal moisturisers daily for the past 18 months after years of suffering.

Thank you it does but I am still getting the awful burning all the time. I am having my bladder and kidneys scanned tomorrow but I really think the issue could be what you described.

Yes I had the scan too, didn’t show anything. I don’t get any burning that must be awful x good luck with your scan.
