It isn't a common problem due to pred - but sicca syndrome isn't unusual in autoimmune disorders.
I get dry gritty eyes and sometimes get a dry mouth too. I put it down as an autoimmune symptom. I didn’t notice it worsening with prednisone.
Hi just read your post on your symptoms of dry mouth and gritty eyes. Have you got Sjögrens if not look up the symptoms and ask a dr to send you for a test. I too have the symptoms and am awaiting to be tested for it plus schlerederma which are both linked to lupus and other auto immune diseases. The problem is Drs are quite happy to leave us undiagnosed and we are left to diagnose ourselves. I am on google 24/7 to give me some ideas to take to the rheumatologist it has served me well as it’s how I found out I had M.E , chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and lupus. I know say to my son just having a private consultation with dr google 😂 which makes my son laugh. It’s only by research and this site which has kept me sane. Keep a symptom diary get your medical notes and research your symptoms then run it by your health care professionals. My rheumatologist explained once you have an auto immune disease you can develop more. Sometimes they need a nudge in the right direction. With tests you can find out what’s causing your symptoms. Have a great day. Elena
I have Sjogrens which is so dehydrating! Try Xylimelts from mouthulcers.co.uk - you can put them onto your gum at night to keep moist or during the day. I also suck sugar free boiled sweets (not too many as they can cause problems) or chew sugar free gum. I put cucumber into water with lemon slices or apple - even in sandwiches as cucumber is so water loaded. All this fairly inexpensive, after spending a fortune on mouth washes, pastilles etc that did tiddly swat. Oh and keep chopped up apple or cucumber in a container in car or bag. Just a slice restores my throat. Good luck
Prednisolone also messes with your glucose so thirst could be a sign of increased blood glucose level. Simple urine dipstick can check for that if it continues
Thank you that makes sense, I’m trying to cut back on sugar in my diet too.
I've taken prednisolone for 10 yrs now, no dry mouth due to that but outside chance- do you have a raised blood glucose? Mine goes up on high doses and that can make me thirsty.
Probably. Currently on 10mg.
I don’t check my glucose levels but I eat candy and sweets like a child. Need to cut backkkkkkk. Why do I love sweets so much? I’ll blame that on prednisone as well.
Hi Mishycake,
We published a blog article on coping with dry eyes and dry mouth, you may find the information and tips in the article helpful -lupusuk.org.uk/dry-eyes-and...
Dry mouth/throat can be caused by Sjögren’s Syndrome. To find out more about Sjögren's, visit the BSSA (British Sjögren’s Syndrome Association) website at bssa.uk.net/
The Lupus Encyclopedia provides general measures to help alleviate dryness of the mouth:
•Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day
•Avoid dehydrating fluids such as alcohol and caffeine
•Avoid smoking
•Use gum and mints that contain xylitol throughout the day
•Eat soft, moist food if you have trouble swallowing
