Have any of you experienced a reaction to the Moderna vaccine? I had mine on Saturday and by the evening my arm was so painful, I couldn't sleep. Sunday morning I woke up with a red rash and swelling some way below the injection site. This has increased.
This is my third Moderna vaccine ( all previous ones have been Pfizer but can't get it now) and had no reaction to the other two.
A Google search listed 'Covid arm' and states it will go within a week. Do I just wait it out? I'm currently taking 400mg of Hydroxychloroquine daily for my Lupus.
Thanks in advance
Alison.

Yes did it first thing this morning. I didn't realise there were other variants of the Moderna vaccine as well - I may well have had a different type on the two occasions before.
Yes, I did take paracetamol in the evening but it didn't touch the pain. 😞
I had significant swelling , itching and redness around the injection site for nearly a week and a dramatic lupus flare 3 days after the injection which is only just settling. Never happened to me before with any of my covid jabs. Worrying.
It is worrying, isn't it? We're advised to have them but this reaction has scared me and like you, has started a flare. I hope you are starting to feel a better now.
My husband has had exactly the same reaction and he has no connective tissue or immune problems. It’s still there but seems to be a bruise now a week later. I’ve just got him to report on the yellow card system. I’ve yet to have mine as cancelled it three times due a flare with gut and uti problems. Incidentally one of our centres do walk in which I’m going to do. It’s difficult to predict how I’ll be in advance.
Yes I had a bad reaction quite a while back now. Had bruising on my arm for about two weeks and it brought on a serious flare. I haven't had any boosters since. After all I do spend all of my life avoiding triggers as much as possible. I hope you feel better soon 💜🌈🦋
I had Moderna Spikevax 5 days ago at 2 pm. By 9pm my arm was aching really badly and felt like it was on fire and by bedtime, the rest of me felt like it too. My face was bright red and hot to the touch. I hardly slept a wink, I was burning up and sweating.
Next morning, my partner said I looked awful and went to find our thermometer. I had a temperature of 37.8. Officially fever level.
I felt really spaced out until early evening but I gradually cooled down during the day. Now, 5 days after the jab, I can finally raise my arm again, though there is a hard lump at the injection site, which itches.
I have never reacted to any of my previous Covid boosters.
Reading DorsetLady's reply, I wish I had taken paracetamol afterwards. I have reported it via the Yellow Card system.
Sorry to tell you this 😊 -I had Moderna/Spikevax yesterday -apart from mild headache for about an hour a few hours afterwards - and usual slight tenderness around site - no issues.
But then I never do… must be something to do with being a Viking goddess (in-joke on PMRGCAuk forum). Too lengthy to explain!
Yup, loathe it too.Just checked out the Viking link.
Seems we have a bit in common. I was blonde all my life but with green eyes. Celtic blood...I have inherited genetic haemochromatosis aka the Celtic curse.
Been Pagan since forever. Called my whippet Freya ( the other was Kali after the Hindu goddess of destruction).
I'm a little bit younger but certainly a "warrior" 😁....less and less tolerant as the years go by.🤣🫂🕉️
I had bad reaction to Moderna too, I’ve never had that one before I had sore arm for days and felt terrible. I know others have felt the same so I don’t know what’s different about it.
I had a similar reaction to what you are describing with my shingles vaccine. My GP put me straight onto antibiotics as he said it was a soft tissue infection caused by the jab. Like you the red swollen patch (no rash in my case) was below the site of injection. It might be worth sending a photo to your GP to make sure it isn’t an infection. Best to be safe than sorry. Take care. Xx
That’s what I did and my GP phoned me straight back and put me on the antibiotics. I notice you said the patch is hot and spreading. That’s what mine did until the antibiotics halted it. Don’t delay. Let us know how you get on. Xx
So sorry to hear of your reaction and hope things improve quickly. I had the Moderna booster in spring and went in to a 17 day flare not leaving the house. I had only a mild bruise like feeling to the injection site. Previously, I had no side effects from the Pfizer one. I haven't had my winter booster yet. I would send a photo through to your GP for advice. Take care x
Hi. Yes the vaccine can make your arm quite sore. It is perfectly normal. It is strangely enough a good sign. It is a good reaction by your body to a foreign invader. You are being protected will. Only if it goes scarlet and swollen should you check with your GP or if the pain lasts longer than a week.
I’ve always had a sore arm and a large pale pink area (Covid arm), an instant headache and flu like symptoms after my jabs. But I had mine yesterday and this time the injection site is red, hard and hot to touch. And *extremely* itchy.
I’ll report to the yellow card thing. I’ll still keep having them though. Having been hospitalised twice with Covid (lupus has damaged my lungs and I have fibrosis and ILD) the alternative is worse than the vaccine!
Happened to me some years ago, my arm was painful with a lump at the injection site. I rang my gp who told me it was a reaction to the vaccine, nothing worry about and to put ice on it, wait a few days and if it didn't clear up to ring again and arrange to go down to the surgery. It cleared up 😊
I was on the same dose of hydroxy as you for Lupus. Can't recall what the vaccine was but it settled down. I shouldn't worry xx
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that replied and gave me their advice and support. GP agreed it was a reaction to the vaccine and advised me to watch and wait until today. Thankfully it has settled - rash, swelling and heat have gone. I have still got pain but it comes and goes. It has caused a flare though - but what doesn't?!Thanks again 😊
