Salty goo and electrolyte imbalance

overnighthearingloss profile image

I guess many have seen twitchytoes's posts about salty goo.

After personally experiencing something like that I decided to try to find out what might be going on, away from all the obvious labels.

It seems that chronic dehydration will cause this but often it cannot be relieved just by drinking water. Some seem to think deficiencies of b12 or zinc might exacerbate the problem. But it's also apparently something you can get with an electrolyte imbalance.

Here's what I have read. Coconut water is nature's way of helping to restore electrolyte balance. Coconut water has even been used in emergency battlefield situations when regular remedies were unavailable.

I don't know if this will help TT but might make interesting reading for some of you.

I’ve read great things about coconut water - in particular for helping to absorb essential nutrients. The B12d forum was where I first read about it. It’s inexpensive and easy to source and it can’t hurt, can it? Xx

I know. I have read quite a lot about it at different times. I might just try some.

I lost my comment due to editing with tnumb finger tips! Hopefully you got an email alert but just to say I’ll give it another go as bloods always make me out to be dehydrated despite drinking like a fish and peeing like a horse! Humidifier helping too. 😊🙏

I saw something flash but it disappeared.

I've felt rubbish ever since this cold weather hit but the last few days have been a nightmare. And the salty goo thing has reared its head. Initially I kept trying to pin it to things I had eaten or not eaten in earlier days. But maybe it's part of a flare kickstarted by a cold.

Seeing the consultant soon so trying to wait it out with lots of rest. I really need to be somewhere hot. I can't cope with the cold.

I have had limited appetite mainly due to constant wretching brought about by the salty goo. Then coughing. Then wretching again.

But I have felt a craving for meat which would contain b12 and zinc. But if the electrolyte balance thing might float then I think I might try coconut water. Its apparently very close chemically to blood plasma.

When they put you on a drip when you arrive at hospital it's because it stabilises all sorts of ills. Coconut water has been used in the same way in emergency situations.

Coconut water though, not the milk. And apparently it rehydrates much better than normal water.

Sorry you too are struggling with the colder weather. I think winters are becoming increasingly grim but I can’t contemplate relocation. My new humidifier seems to have taken edge off some of the gooeyiness at least so I would recommend this.

I am squeamish re drinking coconut water for exactly the reason that it has a plasma like quality to it. But this is just silly so will definitely give a try. It won’t be today though but next time we shop.

Apparently fermented coconut water is meant to be good for the gut. I think i have seen regular coconut water in the shops but dont know about the fermented variety.

in reply to overnighthearingloss

Fermented might be a step too far for my innate squeamishness and altered sense of taste to cope with.

Alternatively there’s gin!

in reply to overnighthearingloss

And high %?CBD oil and a good humidifier!

Where can you get that. Can't do alcohol these days ☹. A sniff makes me drunk.

in reply to overnighthearingloss

Me too. The drunker the better! CBD oil can be ordered online through CBD Brother’s UK and is more expensive than coconut water but tastes much nicer tbh! X

in reply to overnighthearingloss

PS and craft gin and CBD oil are both derived from nature too. But don’t taste like human plasma!

Where can one get fermented coconut water?

I don't know. But if somebody does maybe they could mention it here

Hi again. I’m sure coconut will only be beneficial (see quote below). My GP and I are now fairly certain that my goo and related sticky cough both are probably GERD related. info.sjogrens.org/conquerin...

“Swallowing problems may be related to esophagus muscle inflammation (myositis), dryness, or nerve dysfunction. Soft foods, olive oil, and coconut water might help.”

It has been confirmed my swallowing problems are being caused by nerve disfunction have been advised to drink fizzy drinks such as coke etc and it does help it also helps with the goo and drink flat is a electronic help greatly when I had stomach bug recently.

in reply to farmerfeste

Thanks. What does “drinks flat is an electronic help” mean? I actually have a love of iced fizzy cola and lemonade but have had to avoid all cold drinks and foods now because of the awful Trigeminal Neuralgia cold triggers. Somehow warm and fizzy doesn’t appeal! I had a normal barium swallow which I think shows it’s reflux related for me and drinking lying down probably just makes the regurgitation of acid more likely I’m guessing.

Hi TT, I think what farmerfeste means is that if you leave coke to go flat it acts as an electrolyte. Leaving it to go flat and at room temp, I have found works best for me. Even though the medical profession won’t advocate the benefit of coke used in this way, it does seem to act as a sort of electrolyte for some people. Not as efficient as electrolytes you can buy but the sugar, fluid and other stuff in full fat coke, taken in little sips at a time, does seem to settle the digestive system and also help slow down any bouts of sickness and diarrhoea too. Xx

in reply to Horsewhisper

Oh yes this makes complete sense now - I’m just so literal sometimes - especially after very little sleep!! Thanks I’m going to try this!

It was supposed to mean coke taken flat is a good electrolyte as recommended by docter when I had food poisoning a few weeks ago

in reply to farmerfeste

Gotcha - thanks

Mmmn. I never drink sugary drinks these days as I find that they are more likely to set off an acid attack in the first place.

farmerfeste profile image
farmerfeste in reply to overnighthearingloss

I realise we can't all take sugary drinks but my swallowing problems are caused by a nerve disfunction as are twichy toes I hope you are well today

Take it easy

I understand where you are coming from but I try to limit sugar intake as much as possible as it seems that cancer thrives on glucose and I don't want to give something like that an unnecessary helping hand when we already follow immuno suppressant therapys to control the lupus and other things.

I had a cancer scare a couple of years back so I take care with sugar intake and limit my carbohydrates which break down into glucose in the body.

But that's just me and my rationale. I have however found inflammation levels overall have been more manageable since I made these changes.

I saw consultant yesterday. He prescribed Hydral. Its a minty dry mouth relief spray. It tastes ok. Will try it a while to see if it helps. But not had severe salty mouth for a couple of days so may have to wait a while for a proper test.

in reply to overnighthearingloss

Interesting options - thanks. Stopped off for a coke on way home from dropping son. Slipped through straw away from teeth but gastritis very bad last night after eating a small burger so guessing my body is being my health policewoman!

I’ve been using 5% CBD oil as does the friend with GERD we stopped by yesterday. She says her gastro consultant wants to operate to stop acid spilling back further up - create bigger opening or something . She says she has oesophagus spasms which I sometimes get too. Hers is non autoimmune.

So we are both choosing CBD and so far it’s not helped with the pain but my non existent taste buds pick it up as a slightly interesting hint under my tongue. Waiting for go ahead on Carbocesteine for breaking up goo. I told her about flattened coke restoring electrolyte balance and coconut water. She’s going to try both as really doesn’t want to have stretching surgery.

Use cbd oil to, it does help to calm nerve spasms etc

My consultant didn't seem to think I was in a flare but was more worried that I might be anaemic which could indicate I am still experiencing blood loss somewhere, especially following my massive gi tract bleed in August.

Next step is tube down the throat to check if everything looks ok, if my present coughing fits will allow for it.

in reply to overnighthearingloss

Good luck - think I’m going to need the same. X
