Scalded Hand & Fingers

Hey šŸ˜¢

Saturday evening I accidentally scalded my hand palm & fingers whilst trying to make a hot water bottle.

Iā€™ve had episodes of numbness & loss of sensation in my left hand, that evening whilst holding & filling the bottle with boiling water I lost the feeling in my hand lost the ability to grip, the water from the kettle went on to my hand, that I barely felt but as the water started pouring out the top of the bottle on to my fingers & hand I had immense pain ! I dropped the bottle on the work surface.. boiling hot steam blasted my fingers I then rested my hand in the pool of water by accident. Horrible burns!! I cried & cried all night long . The burning sensation lasted hours. My palm hand & fingers have now got many blisters! As you can see from the photo. The swelling has calmed down a bit since Saturday but itā€™s still red extremely dry & numb in places.

I cannot feel my thumb, the skin is numb near the crease & on my palm is blistered & painful, In between each finger the skin is peeling! The finger next to my pinky is numb & in a stiff position, Iā€™ve tried to move it but struggling, will the feeling come back ??? I know it will take a while to heal, but some of the blisters have popped! I canā€™t wash up, or put gloves on as I can still feel the deep burn, & if I brush it with clothing it really hurts. Even using the oven the low heat air caused pain.

Iā€™m due to see the nurse tomorrow to check it over. I hope she can advise me on whatā€™s the best step to take.

The skin around the thumb & index finger is my main concern as itā€™s turning a deep blue colour, I assumed it was bruising from the trauma of the water but itā€™s getting darker by the day... clueless !!

X

Please phone GP urgently or go to A&E if you are worried Laura as we canā€™t give medical advice here and I really donā€™t know about burns although I can relate to dropping things due to hand numbness and it must be very painful as it looks x

I hope you called 999 and got A&E to have a look - those are serious burns there and needed attention. The skin is broken by the looks of things and could get infected. At the very least did you immerse you hand in cold water for a longish time?

Have you got a microwave? You can get hottie bottles for heating in there - nothing to spill!

And do ask the nurse if you can be referred to occupational health or advice about managing household tasks with neuropathy in your hand.

This burn looks serious!

Should go to A and E, all Burma need to be treated with cold water asap and may need more serious medical attention

Ouch, poor you. I did the exact same thing a couple of months ago only I dropped the boiling, open hottie onto my foot. My burn/blister was very large & painful but not as extensive as yours. I hope you have been able to get it looked at and itā€™s beginning to settle down.

Who would have thought that keeping warm could be so perilous!!! Xxx

Hi LauraMK30,

How did your appointment with the nurse go?

According to the NHS website, you should always seek medical advice immediately after suffering from a burn; you can ring the 111 advice line if you are unsure of what to do.

If burns are not treated in the correct manner, an infection can occur which can cause further problems. Below are two key factors to look out for an infected wound:

ā€¢It's uncomfortable, painful or smelly

ā€¢you have signs of cellulitis, a bacterial infection that causes redness and swelling of the skin
