Hi MagsaTrini ,

It could possibly be lupus but that may not be the only possible cause. Have you been in the sun/exposed to UV light?

For more information about skin involvement in lupus you can read/download our booklet here - lupusuk.org.uk/wp-content/u...

Sorry you have this symptom. Another user of this community has the same symptom, Weathervane. She has primary Sjögren's. Hopefully she will come on but otherwise I'm sure you could message her to ask more about it.

Hi there , i have also had a problem with burning itchy scalp. I have asked my husband to look and he can't see any redness , gp can't see anything as i was worried about shingles, and hairdresser can't see anything. Its is much worse at night and my scalp is sore touching the pillow. I have tried hair oil , rubbing it on the irritated areas which helped a bit and im now using black seed oil which seems to be more successful. I don't know the cause , I don't think its the sun as I haven't been out much. My hair dresser thought it sounds like a nerve end pain which makes more sense. I need to discuss it with the rheumy and get her take on it though if it is a neuropathy I might need a referral to a neurologist. My I mentioned it to the gp she wasn't really that interested but as im sureyou know it is very unpleasant as it can keep you awake . I hope this might be of some help I will follow the thread to see if anyone else has other suggestions. Best wishes 🌸🌸🌸🌸

Thank you for replying and sharing, please let me know how you get one...... Mine doesn't itch and it's pink/red...... Feels sunburnt but I know it's not as I avoid the sun and use a UV umbrella..... Mine does not itch but very painful mainly down the top of head, slight feeling on tops of arms too.... I was thinking it was bulbs at work but they changed them some time ago from flourescent to LED? I have my 6 mo th check with rhuematologist tomorrow so will mention it

Best of luck to you, keep me posted 😊🙃🙂

I have had similar and with my arms and hands too. Gabapentin helped a bit. I still get some slight tingling in my arms and hands though.

I have a slightly itchy scalp but only a little, and no hair loss. A couple of patches of my scalp hurt to the touch ( no redness). Having my hair cut is uncomfortable in those places, but my hairdresser knows where. We whisper when there's a little one waiting who is a little nervous. Don'y want them to think cutting hair hurts! x

Sounds painful.... Mine does not itch... It's red and feels like sunburn... Mainly along top of head, thinning of hair

I hope you get some relief soon, keep me posted 🙃😊 x

It does sound neuropathic. I wonder if you have had an MRI of your neck? I recall being at a meeting of ambassadors for the RA charity a few years ago and the CEO asking if others had this painful tingling scalp at all. The guest rheum professor said it can be a symptom relating to cervical Spondylitis (arthritis of the neck). Worth asking your rheum about for sure.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing intense scalp pain. I too had the same symptoms, burning scalp & hair loss on the top of my head. I thought I had a severely burned my scalp. After 3 weeks of unrelenting, intense pain, I visited my Dermatologist. He took a couple of biopsies and ordered lab work. Both came back positive for Discoid Lupus. I took Plaquenil for 1 yr and was able to get the Lupus under control. I never go outside for more than a few minutes without a hat. I wear UV blocking clothing and have eliminated all personal products with chemicals, there are numerous natural options for the products. Sulfates and parabens are really bad. I have experienced 1 flare since my diagnosis 8 yrs ago. My hair is very thin on top so I use keratin fibers (xfusion) to hide the patches. If you do have Discoid Lupus know that you can make changes to your life to keep it at bay. Good luck & take care of yourself.

Thanks very much for your reply and sharing your story.... I too had a biopsy about a year ago which confirmed lupus cutaneous, I have been on hydroxychloroquine for about 9 months, avoid sun as 10-15 cause blisters and rash, use hats and or uv umbrella . Ice had this feeling on off for about a year but this time it's been a few days?? Last year work changed flourescent bulbs above me to LED.... Only thing left to try is eliminating shampoos with chemicals etc

Thanks again

I found the natural shampoos helped a lot. I use Nature's Gate Tee Tree Oil shampoo; & conditioner; it's soothing & feels cool on your scalp. Alternate with the moisturizing products. I also only use castile soap on my body. You will find a good selection of natural products. : )

Hi i have sle and i have experienced burning scalp especially on top, along with hairloss too. Also when my scalp feels like burning I have headache too. But my scalp looks normal no red patch. My hair just got thinner on the top and front. I have very dry skin. I still dont know is it only my sle or i develop another autoimmune disease. The hair loss is very bothering right now.
