High cholesterol
Hi Mealfredo78 ,
High cholesterol can be a result of various genetic and lifestyle risk factors. Some of these risks can be increased in people with lupus. Has your doctor set out a diet/exercise/treatment plan to help reduce your cholesterol?
Here is what 'The Lupus Encyclopedia' says about high cholesterol in lupus;
"A diet low in fat and cholesterol helps to decrease levels of total cholesterol and LDL 'bad cholesterol'. Regular aerobic exercise helps to increase levels of HDL 'good cholesterol' and most likely decreases the chances of having bad proinflammatory HDL. People who have SLE who have abnormal cholesterol levels should employ these healthy lifestyle habits. In addition, moderate intake of alcohol can also help to increase HDL levels while taking hydroxychloroquine decreases both total and LDL 'bad' cholesterol levels. Many people who have SLE should consider taking medications, especially statins, to control their cholesterol levels."
I saw something the other day that 0.5 teaspoon of Cinnamon helps to lower cholesterol. I am trying it but can't tell you whether it is working or not Another thing that I know helps a lot is to stick to Slimming World Healthy Eating Plan.
There is some evidence suggesting that it may help reduce LDL, but caution is advised. You can read more here - peoplespharmacy.com/2012/01...
Are you on steroids? Steroids increase your cholesterol unfortunately
Get your Vit D checked as vitD is a controlling mech for Cholesterol they have found.
A natural thing can use is Serrapetese made from silkworm works very well lowers C and BP have a few used it and worked great and no side effects unlike statins!
Please be aware that it is highly unlikely that any alternative or complementary therapy with have 'no side effects'. Just because something is 'natural', does not mean that it is safe for everybody. Serrapeptase might interfere with blood clotting, so extreme caution must be taken if the person has a bleeding disorder or are on any medications that slow blood clotting.
Statins can potentially cause side effects in some people, but they have also been clinically proven to be effective in lowering cholesterol, are regulated and prescribed by a supervising doctor.
I think diet can definitely help. I've only had raised cholesterol once and it was due to eating a lot of cheese. I cut out cheese....as I kind of knew it must be that, as I had recently starting trying lots of different kinds.when I stopped eating it, the cholesterol went back to normal levels.
I haven't had any problems since.
I hope you find out a way of reducing it.
