Hip replacement looming.

Hi, I am hoping you might give me some extra encouragement.

I am due to have a total hip replacement on Monday.

I have been putting it off, as my Mum is terminally ill, and I have been splitting my time at home and staying with Mum.

But now it will be weeks until I can travel to see her.

So this is wearing heavily on my mind.

Has anyone had a total hip replacement and do you have any good tips?

I have to have my other hip replaced when my first hip has settled.

So I shall be doing my physio, and following the guidelines, but I am still a bit anxious.

I can't wait for the pain to be reduced, hopefully maybe even gone.

Any tips would be gratefully received.

Many thanks, Sandy

I had a total hip replacement 2 years ago. Wonderfully. I'd suffered pain badly for over a year and in the end I could, the walk. The day after my op the pain had gone (apart from the op pain which was eased by painkillers) I was walking with crutches on the first day. By second week I was on 1 crutch and within the month I threw the crutches away. Before your operation get prepared. As I live alone I had all rugs pulled up. Had suction handles put in my bathroom. Borrowed a shower stool and purchased a high toilet seat. My main chair seat cushion was raised by a second cushion. Another good idea is to have a large shoulder bag to carry things around in as during the first week your hands are busy with crutches.

Good luck and look forward to being pain free and much more mobile.

Hi Sandy, I've no experience of this but just wanted to say Good Luck with the op & I'm sure that many of us here will be thinking about you.

I'm so sorry that your mum is very unwell. It will be much easier to travel to see her when you're pain free.

Sending you gentle hugs & lots of love, jilly xx

Hi mine lasted 24 years last Dec I had to have bone graph still have my original hip , it's been excellent , the only thing you can't do for six weeks is bend more than 90oo and drive of cause , + putting those dreaded elastic stocking on , they will have you walking to the toilet after a day, you will be fine ,nothing to stop you visiting your mother if you have transport,

Wishing you well ,let us know how you are getting on

Thank you, I must admit though elastic stockings are a battle to get on, (my

Husband does it for me at present) light support, so goodness knows what a tighter support will be like ha ha

I am so glad you had a positive outcome, and I look forward to 20yrs of being mobile and active.

I will keep you updated,

Thank you, Sandy

Hi, I thought I would give you an update.

I have had my hip replaced and all went well. My blood pressure dropped and I lost a lot of blood during surgery, so a bit tired and wobbly at the moment.

I may need a blood transfusion just waiting to see.

I had surgery with an epidural, so I was awake, which I wasn't keen on,

But to anybody who is worried about the procedure I promise it is not bad, or anything to worry about.

Out of bed day after surgery worst part is the swelling and tightness caused by surgery down my thigh and knee.

So all is well, and too anyone about to have a hip replaced it is a little scary, but if I can do it anyone can.

Take care.

Sandy x
