I have just realised that I have started another 5 week course of steroids today and my appointment was a bit chaotic yesterday with Dermy who prescribed them - I didn't ask about calcium supplements, that someone had raised on here with me last time they were prescribed. I thought that last time it wasn't an issue, as it was likely to be a one off course. But the MMF hasn't kicked in yet.
I currently take a multi vitamin and mineral supplement - Perfectil for Hair, Skin and Nails - Vitabiotics (I know it's probably useless, but it makes me feel better!) and that contains:
Vitamin D (as D3 200IU) - 5ug(microgram) - 100% of your recommended.
Any advice would be very welcome.
Thank you.

OK. I might be able to answer my own question. You need Vit d and calcium supplements if you are on more than 7.5mg of prednisolone for more than 3 months. Does that sound right?
Yes you do need Calcium and Vit d together and need them if steroids are at that level!. Better to be safe than sorry. Worth asking your GP about a Dexa Scan if you haven't had one. Glad you had a good Dermy appt which achieved a lot and your being well monitored. Fingers crossed that Myco kicks in soon. X
Thanks Misty14. I am always worried about my bones with my osteoarthritis - hips, knees and back now too. So will speak to my GP when I get back from my holiday. Thanks again.
Having osteoarthritis isn't a factor with bone density. It's the steroids that can cause the problem which is why it's important to be monitored. Good luck for your Hol. X
Thank you! Rash vests, floppy hat, sunglasses, sun cream and meds all packed! Phew. It's stressful getting ready for a holiday. Can't wait to relax with a book. x
I was told to take 1000IU vitD and 200mg calcium. Recommended doses will vary for evryone however. I am currently only on 5mg prednisone but have been taking it for several years which is why they are worried about my bones. Make sure you don't take the calcium at the same time as other pills as it may affect absorption.
