Hey friends, I’m going through rough time. I have a chest infection which happened very quickly the doctor gave me antibiotics and steroids (prednisone). I have recently stopped taking my 1mg daily since my flare up/diagnoses. Now the doctor prescribed me 30mg a day! For a few days, which is a lot. That’s how much I was taking after I left the hospital after being diagnosed.
I really don’t want to take the steroids because I had really bad acne on a big dose before and other issues like stomach pains etc. Do you think it’s wise to carry on taking my 1mg and ignore the 30mg prescription? The thing is I don’t really feel like I have anyone else to ask and I feel like the doctor rushed me out quickly as they were busy of course……

It is standard practice now with severe chest infections. You are unlikely to develop bad acne on 5 days even at 30mg. It is a short sharp burst instead of a longer time at a lower dose which might be long enough to cause side effects. He gave it you because he felt you need it - it will get you well quicker.
Hi, I’ve just started 30mg prednisone x 5 days with tapering back down to my base of 5mg for my lung disease apparently it’s standard practice. I hate steroids but if it does the trick I’ll persevere. Best wishes I hope you feel better soon 💐
My GP always prescribes 30mg prednisolone with antibiotics when I get a chest infection. This is what I have followed for the last 16 years. It is definitely worth following the medical advice given. I hope you feel better quickly x
Hi loopy-lou, I’m currently on 30mg x 5 days prednisolone for breathing difficulties and started tapering down. How do you taper down I’m trying 25 x 3 days, 20 x 3 days then down by 2.5 x 3 days (17.5) until I get back to my base 5mg. Do you do it for longer? I didn’t ask about the plan I just decided 🤷♀️ thanks 🌺
Hi Barbs, I am usually given enough prednisolone to do 5 days at 30mg,then I drop to 25mg for 5 days, 20 mg for 5 days, 15mg for 5 days, 10mg for 5 days then I drop back to my maintenance dose of 5mg. Occasionally, I have had a 5 day course of 30mg then I just take that for 5 days and drop back to my maintenance dose of 5mg. Would it be worth ringing your surgery for advice as you want to get better as quickly as possible. I never feel great when I am on higher steroids for lung issues but they do seem to work. I hope you feel better soon 🌷🌺x
Loopy-Lou, thank you so much for your reply I appreciate the information but you’re probably right I should just ask 😅 I hate being sick but I hate steroids more . Best wishes 🌺
I just stopped taking the 30mg after 5 days and I didn’t come off gradually because it was a quick dose for 5 days but I’m not sure maybe you should ask the doctor
You would need to be tapered off 30 mg and 1 mg would be finishing dose.I'd ask more to taper down not adjust dose wouldn't worry re spots as temporary dosage.
Take with a medal in morning to make sure u sleep is Dr tip I was given
I don't think it'll be "a few days" - probably tapered off for maybe a year. Don't alienate the doc by not doing it, get a face to face meeting & explain your concerns. The side effects are extremely well known. Equally though steroids can be really effective within hours of first dose.
