I've had this problem. Ask your GO for Elcon cream. Really helped my symptoms.

I was at the podiatrist yesterday with the same problem she's advised me to ask the gp for oilatum if possible, thicken it on leave for 15-20 mins (ideally while having a cuppa) then dab off with kitchen roll to do this twice a day until my next appointment (10 weeks) then they're going to help keep on top of it

Hope this helps

My husband suffers from this even more than I do - and my version is pretty bad. He does a lot of outdoor work too, which means his version of this is worsened by all that. He has Crohn's disease, which is also an autoimmune condition, and affects his skin generally as well as his whole GI system. Nothing the gp has ever prescribed for him helps much.

Poor guy, he had such a sore time, with the dreadful splitting especially, and had also tried all the OTC preparations over the years...so finally i started looking online for him. Then, quite a few years ago now, I found what's turned out to be THE answer to his problem with his hands especially...it's a wonderful pot of cream available from the Victoria Health online website:

victoriahealth.com

The product to search for is:

Derma e Skin Care's Vitamin E Severely Dry Skin Cream 12000IU

He applies this cream quite liberally ever night before going to sleep...and he has benefitted from this routine so greatly that he has stuck to this system for years & years now, recommending it to anyone with his kind of probs. I promise: I don't own shares in this!!!!

More recently, say 5 years ago, I also got him onto using the sort of product they scrub into your hands & feet at salons during pedicures & manicures for dermabrasion/exfoliation. His fav is a dermalogica hands & feet exfoliant. He does this every day in the bath & says it really helps reduce the splitting & cracking too. I've even got him using a skin file paddle on really hard patches. AND he, off his own bat, has been taking a high dose vit D capsul daily for years now...

Meanwhile, I'm dealing with my version of these sort of dry skin probs...Certainly I stick to vvvvv mild soaps and am frequently applying creams all day long - e.g. boots do a good arnica cream, but my fav is dr vogels arnica gel. I also like a big pot of l'occitane's basic shae butter body cream

Hope you find something that helps soon!

You may need a dermatology appointment if they are really bad as that they are stopping you doing stuff like eating drinking and getting dressed as they are painful etc.

Its the quality of your life.

Go to your GP and see if he will reefer you and in the meantime ask him for a bottle of cetraban, this will ease the soreness and moisturise your skin.

Good luck and take care of you.

At the recent scleroderma conference in Bath the scleroderma nurse mentioned warm wax baths - apparently they're amazing but it was the first time I came across them - worth a google?

I've had severe skin dryness all my life. Recently my husband, who works in a care home for the elderly, told me that they had real success with Johnston's baby gel with camomile. It is very cheap and this is what I use a lot nowadays because it feels and smells very good. Other products I use are Diprobase ointment (greasy goo!) and Aveeno cream. I know how debilitating cracked dry hands are and also you can pick up infections from the open wounds so it would be good to ask your GP what's causing this and get some treatment as well if you haven't done so already.

My conditions are mild compared to most apart from my pain but what I use for my dry skin is E-45 cream don't work for everyone but worth a try I had to use it for a week before I noticed any improvement.

Diprobase is very good. I also wash with it and moisturize gp recommended it, I didn't like it at first (greasy glopy glue) but was told that my toes were not going to survive another winter so I kept on using it and now my skin is so soft. The only trouble with me now is once out of shower I have to lye down for a couple of hours I'm so tired. Hope this is helpful thanks.

100 % Pure coconut oil has done it for me. Cheap and effective. I apply it liberally every morning & evening - (I also rub it into my hair when it's very dry too). I don't find it at all sticky as some people have complained. Plus, there isn't a single chemical being absorbed through your pores...

Conotrane cream, can be prescribed, or bought, thicker than E45, and stays moist longer.

for dry feet / heels, soak first, then rub with a foot file, dry and apply conotrane. Its no use putting cream on dead skin cells. This method works for me, and I hope it helps others.

I take Omega 7 and fish oil. My skin and eyes have improved a lot, especially after taking Omega 7.

Hey luupysue!

I myself suffer from this problem due to SLE in combo with super bad raynauds. I also graduated back in the day before I got sick from Cosmetology School. Best advice I can give and it will do wonders,,,

Buy Oil Infused Spa Gloves, I got mine at a local department store, depending on where you are they might carry them there and definitely online. Make a mixture of coconut oil (the kind you cook with and vitamin E oil) Lather your hands at night before bed with the cocktail and slip on the gloves. It might get a little hot but it will do the trick!! Also, If you have brittle hair from Lupus Coconut Oil is a miracle worker!

Hope this helps and hope you start getting some relief!

I use E45 cream or if really bad sore fingers I soften my hands in warm water then pat dry (and feet too) and dab bio oil on then wear cotton gloves (or socks) to bed and it works wonders overnight :)

my sis-in-law swears by body shops hemp cream x

My hands will start to crack and bleed every winter and no lotion or cream by itself will help. What I've had to do is mix a little lotion into a glob of Vaseline. Apply a thick layer to my hands and carefully roll a couple of large socks over the goop (sounds kind of weird, I know). Leave on overnight, and they're silky soft come morning.
