Why is it every time I have work done at the dentist I end up with a abcess this is the 3rd tooth over 3 years, every summer I have had one, now back on antibiotics and could lose another tooth, soon as they touch my teeth, I get a infection ?

Yikes, what a nightmare for you lennox! Have you got a Sjogren's Syndrome crossover, with your lupus? Sometimes it can be quite subtle, & go unnoticed. But will play havoc with your teeth & gums.
Check it out with your rhuemy, & let your dentist know about this possibility. Also there is a Sjogren's site on health unlocked. You should get helpful info there on how to prevent further problems.
As if lupus isn't enough to deal with, eh?
I go only cos I'm worried about getting bad teeth with all the medication I take and for my sins I end up worse than when I started never know what to do for the best,
I know it's a nightmare!....damned if you do....
if you take methotrexate should take antibiotics before surgery or dental surgery i had a tooth out a few months ago and had a masive in fection after doc said its not needed
yes do check the possibility of Sjogren's Syndrome. I told my dentist of diagnosis and he now wants to see me every 3 months for check up.
Prevention is always better than the cure lennox. It might be a pain in your wallet, but it should mean less pain in your mouth. Your dentist can prescribe a special high fluoride toothpaste to protect the teeth, & regular visits to the hygienist to prevent those nasty little plaque bugs building up too much.
If you live near a big city, it might be worth asking for a referral to a dental hospital, where you can get the treatment done for free.
I found a good section on lupus & the mouth on LFA website.
Best wishes. X
Thanks for ur reply info use a tooth paste proscribed by my dentist just seems every time I have any work done I end up in so much pain and abcesses driving me mad I take micrphanlate atorvastin waftin plaqnil so not sure if all these diff medications have a reaction with dental treatment, looks like I have to have this out next week can't stand the pain every time I have treatment
Have you tried Co-Enzyme Q10?
A minimum of 60mg caps/daily (100mg when unwell - capsules are easier than tablets for the body to absorb) has been recommended to ME patients for gum problems and mouth ulcers. According to the research study (have lost the article ..published in a dentist magazine) it turned out Q10 also helped with fatigue.
I have 'always' had problems with my teeth and gums, so decided to try Q10 and have taken for some time now. I no longer get mouth ulcers, inflammation, infections - had several loose teeth ..no longer loose. The fatigue is gone too ..only an occasional blip for no more than an hour or so. Before it could go on for days ..weeks even.
Currently, I take 60mg daily dosage (100mg when good price). I buy online ..always checking for best price. I also take homoeopathic remedies before and after any dental work. Hope you find something to suit you. Good luck. xxx
Thanks for the heads up I have to call the dentist on Monday I'm so worried about having it out now but I have to as the ache is not good either, still can't open my mouth proper, and still swallow at the moment, I wish I never had any teeth
Hi, im the same, ive had couple of abcesses, an extraction and 2 broken teeth in last year! Its devastating i hate the dentist, however he has prescribed a high fluoride tooth paste to help with things, so i know how you feel! Just another symptom of good old lupus i suppose!
You say that Hun but when I ask my lupus doc if its cos lupus or the. Drugs like always get told no its just one of them this, I really don't believe her I have always looked after my teeth and have regular check ups. I use a proscribed tooth paste from the dentist. Insure it's to do with all the drugs they keep pumping me with x
Ditto, 2 abcesses and lost three teeth in lost 24 months - last tooth lost last friday due to massive abcess and now on antibiotics, I have SLE but have never been diagnosed with Sjogrens - am now beginning to question sjogrens having read all of the comments above - and i'm always still amazed that everything comes back down to lupus!
All the best.
Oh thanks, I'm dreading this week cos I go away on Friday which means when I call her tomorrow I have to go to the hospital and have my blood levels checked as I'm on wafrin then book to have the tooth out all before I go away or do I chance going away and having it done when I come home and just put ip with the sensitive tooth, if I do that what happens if it kicks off again ? Just don't know what to do for the best, one way of looking at having it out once its gone it can only heal
