My husband started carboplatin and pemetrexed for NSCLC 4 days ago. He is now feeling very sick and vomiting. He's not bringing much up as he can hardly eat. He's been taking metaclopramide for five days now but it's not helping. It says on the box that metaclopramide shouldn't be taken for more than five days. So now what? Has anyone else had delayed sickness and nausea and how long did it last and what did you take?

Get in touch with the hospital/speciliast nurse straight away and they will help you. They are often excellent on prescribing medication for symptom management and can give a combination of treatments. Everyone is different so get medical advice.. but I have previously been on metoclopromide three times a day for months for a different condition so it may be that they only say for a short time so you keep in touch with them so they know how things are going ? Sorry that he is struggling, in my experience it is common for side effects from chemo.to start on the third day

I found that Ondansetron was more effective for me than other anti nausea and sickness medication. Hope your husband’s sickness and nausea is soon under control and the treatment proves effective. x

I had the same combination of chemo last year and I found that I felt nauseous after every course , It did go away after a week or so .In my case to be replaced by cravings for soup or burgers ,it was all very strange.I had six treatments and all of them were similar as in the nausea,the sickness tablets seemed to cope with it only once did I have to visit a walk in centre because it was out of hours and I couldn't stop being sick and I was given an injection which did the trick.These experiences may have been exclusive to me.
I hope you husband gets through this period of nausea and feels a bit better soon.

hi Goingcuckoo, I had the same treatment, and felt like I had a five day hangover after chemo, feeling very delicate the first time, only nibbling very plain food. After each of the other treatments feeling a little better than the one before. I'd have a five-day hangover, then tired for a week, then sore eyes for the last week then start again. When I went for my second treatment, I was given loads of medication, so felt a lot better facing the side effects after chemo, despite some of the tablets being disgusting, as they melt in your mouth and taste like liqi tabs. Go vegan, plenty of prunes, and water, don't forget suncream, as any sun about and your husband will get burnt, I did in Nov. Your tastes will change too, there's a lot I couldn't stomach after chemo that I thought I liked, and took a while to the taste for them back, water was the big surprise for me, I had to have barley water with it.

The GP has prescribed melt in the mouth Prochiorperazine as first line as he can't keep anythng, even water down. If that doesn't work he's to try oral Ondansetron tomorrow. If that doesn't work she'll do a house call and give him an antisickness injection. Fingers crossed these work.

You have been given good advice from others on the forum.You b really do need to speak to the chemotherapy nurses ASAP.There are lots of medications to control the nausea and vomiting available.Hopefully it will settle and he will feel better soon.
