Mitral valve replacement

my mother in law had open heart surgery 4 days ago, all went well heart is working well just a complication with kidneys and was put on dialysis but the kidneys slowly started to wake up, she hasn’t woke up from being sedated 4 days ago yet, she is unresponsive too, doctors have said about doing brain scans on Monday! Has anyone been in this situation or can advise me?

I haven’t stopped worrying she is the most loveliest person, we just want her back?

I had my aortic valve replaced 4 ½ years ago. I was sedated before my op because I was so seriously ill. I was expected to come round fairly quickly, this changed to expectation of a couple of days, then a week etc , in the end I was out of it for nearly 2 months. My family were called in twice because I wasn’t expected to make it. I didn’t tolerate the breathing tube so had a trachy fitted.

Your mother’s recovery may take a while. The doctors may be more pessimistic than optimistic.

At this time it’s really important that you look after your self.

The sedative drugs and pain medication that your mother-in-law has received are cleared from the body by the kidneys. Where the kidneys are not working very well then these drugs can build up and take some time to clear. It’s not surprising that she’s taking a while to wake up.

waking from sedation is rarely as straightforward as the medical teams would have you believe - especially if her kidneys have failed and she is on dialysis. This slows down the body’s ability to rid itself of toxins and sedatives.

They feared I had a hypoxic injury because it took me 11 days to come round. I too had aCT scan to rule out damage.

yes we were in a similar situation but different . My brother took sometime to wake up properly from being placed in an induced coma after sepsis from flu. I will post a link for you. Hope your mother in law makes a good recovery.
