Waking from coma: fluctuations

Is it normal for the patient to show a different behavior everyday after coming out of a long induced coma? 3 days ago mom could nod her head, 2 days ago she could say yes and no. Yesterday she hasn't made any communication except by tracking people with her eyes.

She was seen by the same doctor for 4 days and yesterday it was another doctor.

You may find that your Mum is suffering a little ICUdelirium. Apparently I behaved very much like you describe your Mom, very suspicious of everyone & still as anything - just tracking people with my eyes. Trachy meant I couldn’t communicate anyway.

Later, I discovered I was experiencing hypoactive delirium as opposed to hyperactive - which is easier to spot. Mine was temporary - I published a post yesterday which outlined a few tiny differences in the recovery from Covid.

The staff are having to use more & different paralysing agents to help synch the patients on ventilators whilst proning - because they are using proning more frequently than normal.

The sedation will probably increase the chance your loved one will experience delirium - this is normally short lived and passes within a few days.

This gives a great explanation

When did you start swallowing water and food? Mom has a good appetite so we think food would eventually make her happier lol. She started to show signs of conciousness after she was hydrated.

She's breathing on her own and no tracheotomy so I guess she should be able to drink something anytime soon I guess 🙂

Yes, it is normal. It took me a week just to wake up from my coma.

It's good that you're keeping a record of how her state changes from day to day – that will help the doctors assess her progress.

It took her almost 20 days to show signs of conciousness.

I was in my coma for 7 weeks, 4 years ago.

She was in a induced coma for 16 days, they turned off the sedation and another 18 days to show signs of conciousness. Before she just had her eyes open without any communication.

Sorry, I don't know what to say. They were very worried about me – so much so that they sent me for a brain scan. Do talk to her once in a while. I suspect it helped me.

Because they are using loads more paralysing agents than normal -so effectively they are being sedated to a greater degree - it is taking loved ones ages to wake up & ages to start communicating.

Hi. She was able to speak again yesterday. Maybe because the first doctor was back.

We just need her wounds to get better and she needs to start moving and eating. Other than that she looks good.

They let us videocall her. It made me happy but also so sad. She's confused. Her eyes were not fully tracking us. She looked weak and fragile but she nod her head and moved her hands a little...

I hope she improves fast and leave the hospital. I can't deal with my mom like that 😭
