Secondary pneumonia- post covid/ventilator

Hi everyone,

My dad is off the vent and off sedation. He is breathing on his own but still in the hospital. However, today they said his breathing was a bit laboured. They also said his white blood count was low. They are suspecting secondary bacterial pneumonia. They have already started treating it with antibiotics while we wait for the results. If he does have it, those who may have experience, what can we expect moving forward? E.g. will he feel more tired? Will it setback his physio? Will his breathing be ok? Thank you

Every additional infection I had in ICU, slowed up my recovery - I received the best treatment by the most experienced staff and eventually won through

Likewise as Sepsur said my recovery was delayed by infections some times they just don’t know what is the cause is. Quite often they had to make antibiotics especially for me but I have been home now for nearly 9 months

Like others, I also experienced secondary pneumonia and infections which was a set back resulting in a second spell on the ventilator.

As for how you feel I think it varies by person and also whether you’re sedated and for how long, but the important thing is to keep up with the physio, the physios will adapt the exercises as necessary. It’ll be small steps but that’s better than over doing it which just creates more set backs. It’s the small steps which lead to big improvements.
