Suspecting Superficial thrombosis after varicose vein surgery

Hi guys,

I am APS triple positive , DVT on Right calf and Superficial thrombosis on arm 3 years ago.

So after properly bridging from Warfarin to Heparin (100mg a day) to get a saphenectomy (varicose veins) and after 1 week of recovery I started feeling pain in my calf (typical from DVT or similar) and narrow red zones around the leg.

I am suspecting Superficial trombosis from the incision that they made, in spite of me being on Heparin until today (bridging back to Warfarin this week).

Does anyone have experienced this? How did you handle it?

It seems that once they invade my veins with needle I clot no matter what.

Look forward to your reply

Be safe,

Ignacio

I never had surgery for my DVTs which I had before my diagnosis and treatment for APS. I made it a discipline to elevate my feet as often as possible, wear those awful support hose. We belonged to a swim club and my children loved the pool! If I can find a way to wear support hose AND my swim suit AND swim at a pool, then I venture to say that unflattering and inconvenient -or downright HARD--as they are to wear, it can be done. Also, when I had no leg pain, I did exercises with ankle weights to strengthen my calf and thigh muscles. In hind sight, those repetitive DVTs were probably caused by APS. But gradually, sticking to this regimen did help. If I strayed from my leg elevation and exercise regimen, the leg pains would return. I never had surgery for my leg pains, so I have no post sygery experience to share. My DVTs were in the early 80s and my dx and treatment came in 2000. Since then I have let my leg regimen slip away, and have had no pains. Stay strong and maybe ask you provider if a consult with a physical therapist might harden your leg muscles and reduce DVT occurrences.

Thanks Gina!

Yesterday they ruled out DVT with an ultrasound. The swelling was for the extra Heparin and the surface scars of the .

I will now resume my 45 minutes of spinning

🚴‍♂️ daily so I can keep up the blood flow.

I use the sport calves from Compressport (italian brand) and for work the 3M "Futuro" 20-30mmHg .

Best wishes!

Can you return to the doctor who performed the surgery? Ring them? It might be a good idea before the week-end starts. It is important that it is checked out. MaryF

Hi MaryF!

I actually did. Yesterday.

I was somehow able to arrange an emergency Ultrasound + Consult with the surgeon after the exam.

He told me that surgery was evolving just fine and leg was healing as expected.

For bruising he recommended Arnica gel.

Thanks for your comment!
