Thank you all for your replies, which I found very helpful. It turns out that my coil must have dislodged and become ineffective, hence the heavy bleeding, and then was expelled in a giant clot. I've been kept in hospital for the past 2/3 days and have now been released with Provera and Mefanamic acid - until I see the gynae again at outpatients in 10 days time to discuss re-trying a Mirena to tide me over until an MRI scan to look at my fibroids (!), with a view to an ablation. I have been feeling quite unsure about the latter procedure but your enthusiastic replies are making me re-consider my position. So if anyone wishes to add further advice/views re ablation, would be gratefully received.

Thanks to all who replied to my post re Mirena coil & heavy menstrual bleeding....
I almost had to have an ablation. My gyn and I agreed that if my condition worsened in the next year I would consent to one. But then 2things happenned: first, at age 49 my periods began too be irregular as perimenopause was beginning; second, I quite accidentally discovered I had gluten sensitivity and when I eliminated gluten from my diet the fibroids in my uterus, the fibrous cysts in my breast, the symptoms of IBS --all disappeared!
On that next visit I reported much more normal periods and after the doc peeked inside and checked my breasts he loudly demanded to know what I had done!
" eliminated gluten from my diet." I responded. "What else?" "Nothing else, really . Just that." " well, keep it up. Everything looks fine. See you in a year."
Hi Gina,
You are a magic woman.
