I'm looking at a potential C-PTSD diagnosis with abandonment issues. Any advice/experiences/general knowledge anyone has would be SUPER appreciated.

Hi there. I spent years bottling and pushing down my prior traumas. In 2018, I went through a horrific divorce and custody battle. By 2020, my body had shut down after getting COVID. The best thing I did for myself was to find a PTSD counselor. I have always done CBT, but this is working much better. It can be hard to unravel prior trauma, but when you can let it all out....life can change so much for the better. I still have a long way to go, but EMDR with my PTSD counselor has been working. She just got certified for Ketamine as well and am curious about how that all works. Seems they use Ketamine sessions with a counselor for PTSD too.

ptsd.foundation/ Here is some information I found that might give you some understanding and this community here is amazing - full of resilient individuals who while struggling with their own issues are open and receptive to supporting each other by listening, reading posts and offering their own experience, strength and hope - I've never known such support in my lifetime and with their support, I have dared to try new things knowing that I can always come back here to share my experiences, my insecurities, fears, apprehensions, confusion and bewilderment.

Abandonment is the core issue for a lot of illness and there are a great many resources (books, websites, groups) to help one understand what it all means. I can't remember the book that helped me best, I will try to find it and return with the title.

A good counselor, trained in C-PTSD, who will companion you through your recovery is a godsend. You are not alone and are always welcome to share your journey here as we learn from each other.

Hi applejax7,

There is a Topic here called "Abandonment" since it is a part of trauma. You can read other people's posts if it is helpful:

I think exploring the issues with your therapist could help understand how things are connected.

There used to be a term "attachment trauma" or "attachment disorder". I think C-PTSD fits better and may be less stigmatised.

When I first read about it, there was more to it than just the abandonment.

One of the symptoms was possibility of not being able to create new memories because old ones haven't been processed into long term memory, they are still pending so they come up.

Being able to process them to normal memories frees up the space to make new ones and live more fully in the present moment.

Hope you find the diagnosis helpful and that it will give you access to therapy.

Hello, the good thing about getting a diagnosis is knowing where to focus for help. My suggestion is to find a therapist that specifically treats trauma/c-ptsd. Mine used emdr as part of the therapy and I found it very helpful for my healing.

Please don't give up - I'd been trying for 14 years and was sent to various counselling where sometimes the counsellor said nothing just listened, helpful for some but not me. I've not long finished a seminar with the local Mental Health Dept, for PTSD, Acute Trauma has been a real eye opener. So helpful and now I'm waiting to see the psychologist to begin therapy and so I know I'll get there in the end.
