have u tried hot water bottles i find them a great help when my pain is reallt bad. or a hot baththen the bottles and try to relax wish i could teach u my relaxation prosses as it dose help sorry i cant be more help but someone else might hope u feel better soon

Hi mel have you taken your correct amount of meds for the day... It may sound a stupid question but I am guilty of this I feel ok so I miss a dose sometimes its ok sometimes it comes back to bite me good and hard....

Secondly are these normal fibro pains for you.....or are they new......

If you have taken your meds correctly and are in so much pain I would phone your gps surgery out of hours number I had an unbelievably painful attack one night and my oh phoned the GP ...a locum came out, turned out I had suddenly devolved some non specific infection and was given antibiotics there and then , I had a fever and loads of my muscles had gone into uncontrolable spasm I was given something for the muscle spasms and something to help for sleep.... Please don't suffer this sounds like too much pain... It could be fibro it could be something that could be treated now if you can phone your gps out of hours number. Please don't be afraid to bother them

Please let us know how you get on

VG xx

Hi Mel,

I'm sorry to hear you're having so much pain, so what can we do?

First of all, have you taken a good dose of your usual pain killers? If not, then take the max safe dose as directed, with a hot drink.

Try a nice warm shower, and get into bed with plenty of pillows and try to relax.

If none of these things help, I think you should call NHS direct and see if you can access the out-of-hours service for some medical advice (0845 - 46 - 47)

Please don't feel hopeless about this. Fibro is notorious for flaring up and the secret is to learn how to manage it - hopefully a cure will be found one day, but until then we have to fight as best we can!

I see from your profile that you are a compulsive overworker - no wonder you are running into trouble! Your priority is going to have to be yourself, because your family need you, so your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to learn how to take it easy.

If you modify your life style, there's no reason why you shouldn't feel OK most of the time. It took me years to learn this lesson, and I feel for you. Many is the night I have cried from pain in my hands.

I hope you feel easier soon - please don't be afraid of ringing NHS Direct - severe pain is an emergency.

Let us know how you are in the morning - hopefully there will be better news!

Love Moffy x

Hi Mel, I really hope you're feeling better this morning. It's definitely worth talking to your doctor about the fact that your pain is sometimes unbearable. It's possible that you could get some extra breakthrough pain meds or meds to help your muscles relax and allow you to sleep.

But as Moffy said, if you're always overdoing it, Fibro flares are going to be very hard to manage unfortunately.

Best wishes

Linz

Hi Lindsey. To b honest the past year I have mainly been in hospital and housebound unable to do anything not even housework. I try to walk for a quarter a block each day but for anything longer I am pushed in a wheelchair. I have not worked since Nov 2011. So my overdoing it days have been put on hold :-) But... Still alive this morning things just starting to make themselves known again. Will arrange to speak to doc today although as he knows I'm with the pain team next week Fri he will b reluctant to meddle but I will make him do something as I am off to London this Fri to see colonrectal consultant for my post op travelling by ambulance bus.

Will let you know what doc says later.

Thank you Linz... Turn sore to type further xxx

Glad to see you posting this morning and glad to hear you are going to speak to your GP today. Good luck also with the pain team and your post op consultant

Understand my fingers ache all the time and handwriting looks grrrr. This fibro does not leave any part of your body pain free its greedy and chooses what pains and what part is going to be attacked.

Have you tried Epson salts as a hand and wrist soak. Magnesium is so good for aches x .

If you can believe you are not in pain, and visualize pain leaving the body, then it will disappear. It is known as the placebo effect, you simply refuse to believe you have any pain at all, completely ignore it, direct your subconscious mind to heal yourself. Of course your conscious mind will resist this by saying, don't be ridiculous, I am in terrible pain, and you will continue to feel more pain.

This works because that is how sugar coated pills work, a patient is tricked into thinking they are taking a powerful medication that will cure them, it is the mind that actually does the healing, if you can believe this to be true, then it will be true.

in reply toesagestapo

Surely if this was the case it would be available on the NHS and save millions in pain clinics, meds e.c.t ?

Will this also work if I believe I am married to jonny depp?????

@ VG, It is no coincidence that ill people always have negative views. This has been proven to work in clinical trials where the body is concerned, as far as your social life is concerned, again that's up to you to make that happen.

in reply toesagestapo

I know lots of people who are poorly with medical problems and have very possitive thoughts and happy lifes. What about kids who are ill with cancer and other medical problems, they are always smiling...

Sorry I have been ill for 23 years and I refuse to have negative thoughts I love my family and my life love being on here but the pain is there... I actually had some super strong meds once that masked the pain so well I had none so I rushed here and there and when the pain killers were stopped I found I had damaged my ankle some more by not realising it was in pain... Sometimes pain is good it lets us know something is wrong...

VG :)

Agree. It works for some but I ended in hospital for refusing the pain and just pushing my body until it turned round and said 'oh no you don't! And I collapsed at work and blah blah blah :-)

No offense meant at all some of us have gone through yrs of doing that (myself anyway) and I really did cause so much harm. I still live with a.positive outlook though and I think that is what VG meant too. I've had this horrid thing for about 15 hrs now VG for 20 odd. We all go through various mental phases of dealing with the pain, certainly not embracing and loving it. I would rather lose an arm and be without this to be very honest. It has messed up so many things and stopped me.doing so many things that I enjoyed doing. I was an archaeologist... I am no longer even allowed on site because of insurance etc. There are other forces at work alongside fibro that we have.no power over. It is easy to become disheartened or negative. I really do understand what you are getting at, as a minister I lived by faith working in Mozambique during the near helping the bush kids, I lived by faith on the Nairobi Ethiopia border working with refugees... I could go on with many stories. I walked and lived a life of faith and positive thinking for many years.

Ah VG you're an old trooper :-) I was actually addressing esagastapo, who seemed rather put out by our banter. You know what, I don't know you, have spoken with you on this site and followed chats that a bunch of you have been in, but I really like you! I think you're attitude and sense of humor are great and very uplifting.... Keep it up :-)

I know its not for everybody, it is not a faith thing, it is an ability to control pain using the subconscious mind which is very difficult to master. A placebo works because the subconscious mind finds ways of bringing about what you imagine and expect.

I used to be in severe pain and worn out all the time until it dawned on me (I think I read about it somewhere) that the body's own chemistry invariably finds ways to cure itself if you believe it can do that. Medication only works if you believe it does what it says on the bottle, but you won't know for sure what that is as the same meds are used to treat a variety of illnesses, which brings us back to what we expect and why the results differ from patient to patient who take the same pills.

Whoever said, no pain no gain should be shot.

Your welcome, I like a positive outcome. If you believe you must suffer in pain, then you might as well believe that you actually enjoy it.
