Hi sheelagh, It may be an idea to go along to your local NHS mobility centre where they can advise you to equipment that can make life easier, unfortunatly small equipment is not free on the NHS but, they are very helpful and at least you will have an idea of the items that may help you and possibly purchase cheeper from other retailers.

I swopped my large kettle for a travel size kettle - it holds 2 mugs of water- and at least it isn't asheavy and awkward as the lge kettle I also bought a roll of anti-slip matting and cut a square off to hold knives etc but its not heat proof so am careful when holding my cup. but you can buy silicone mats that can be used and are heat resistant from most place

Hi, Sue, i just wonder if you have spoken to your GP about your hands?

I suffer with carpel tunnel syndrome as well as arthritis which are causeing my hand difficulties and hampered more through the fibro, but I know other sufferers of fibro suffer this way too with out other complications.

I do know that in some cases hand splints are available through gp referal to physio dept's and in some cases injections so it may be worth seeing your gp about this.

The other thing i forgot to mention is through my OT i was able to have a trolley to put my cups etc on and wheel the trolley to where i want to eat or drink etc it really helps. You can have a referal through your GP and lge equipment is free on loan for as long as you need them xxx popppy

See your GP. If Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is ruled out, make sure you get assessed for Myofascial Trigger Points - very common with Fibro but require different treatment.

Dont just assume this is Fibro, i had terrible pains in my wrists - waking me up in the night and in pain to distraction. Found out i had carpal tunnel syndrome. I wear splints on my wrists at night and that eased it at first but it worsened and now i have injections into my wrists which help a lot, so do check it out.

I have just had the op to release the carpal nerve.I had it done under local anaesthetic and although it seems to have works as in I have the feeling back in my fingers,I am in terrible pain if I try to pick anything up.Wonder if anyone knows how long it will take to fully recover or as a fibre sufferer am I expecting too much xx

As I think I said in a previous blog unrelated to this one, I too had a Carpal tunnel op in Dec 2010. The op was a breeze under local anesthetic and I was really positive. BUT the pain when it returned was horrendous and although the numbness had gone,(Waking up in the night with a completely numb hand was a bit worrying at times!) the pain and pins & needles hadn't. At my 6 week check the surgeon diognosed Deep Pilar pain and I had 6 weeks of ultra sound treatment. This did help eventually, altho I still can't hold things properly or make a fist, or touch the palm of my hand with my thumb. This has now been classed as a 'failed' Carpal tunnel op. But no way will I go through having it done again. I was off work for 12 weeks in the end.

However I do know of people who have had very sucessful ops, but perhaps the Fibro does effect the recover of this.I wore a splint before my op and it did help a bit, but surgeon decided to skip the round of injections and go straight to the op. Wonder it would have been like if perhaps I had tried the injections first?? Best wishes Sue.

Thanks for the wishes sue x

Best of luck Sue, at least when you've seen your GP and no doubt been referred for XRays, you will know why you have problems with your hands and get treated accordingly. I went to my GP some years ago and after XRays was told I had Osteoarthritis which makes me a bit clumsy sometimes, cups slip out of my hands. Once I knew I had this, I bought gadgets to help me do things easier, grabbers to pick things up, battery operated can openers, grip jar openers etc. I also swapped my kettle for a boiling water dispenser, it's worth its weight in gold, I never have to lift the kettle any more! Makes me a boiling hot cup of tea in seconds! I also bought a lighter Dyson hoover which is easier to grip also! I hope you get some answers soon Sue and things get easier for you, take care! :) :)
