Neoprene thumb supports are easy to keep clean, and allow easier use of your hand, but it's not a good idea to wear them all the time, as the wrist muscles may waste. Perhaps just use them for a few hours?
Your rheumatologist will probably inject some cortisone into the joints - this is very effective, and not as painful as you would think!
You have my sympathy, as I have the same problem - it's a real nuisance!
I too get this its very annoying as it hurts to use my sticks some days... My rheumy said it was the start of arthritis as I have it in other places I can well believe it
Iv been wearing thumb supports for thumb arthritis for 5 years,I originally got them from a physio at the hospital,I have replaced them myself for about £13 from a disability shop, recently when I had an appointment with my rhumatologist I mentioned I needed some new one so she said to pop along the corridor and get some new ones for free.
The ones the hospital uses now is just a thick piece of material wrapped around the hand which I told them they are useless and they were able to find me old stock with metal running down the thumb which give me more support.
If you want to pay out for them yourself then you can get them quite easily from any disability shop or ask to get referred by your Dr to get them free from the hospital.
I find they really help,I don't want to go down the injection route for my arthritis for lots of reasons!
Hi there, i have them and i get them from my occupational therapist - i have the gloves and the
splints. i have 2 types which both support the thumb and one pair comes from your wrist down to your knuckles. I have 2 pairs of gloves one pair are to be worn during the night to help with the pain and the other pair are for during the day when i am not useing the splints. Maybe youior reumi can refer you to an occupational therapist for these,
This is all very interesting and I am also having terrible pains in my wrists hands and finger joints and have been told to self refer to phisio. Now I know what I need to be asking about. Thanks x
Aye, good point. I have trouble with my fingers and thumbs, my left hand is worse. I have a boney 'lump' on my left thumb knuckle and it's really, really painful!! XX
