I’m just wondering if anyone else has had burning mouth syndrome ?

(roof of mouth looks like a bruise but it burns and stings continuously)

I have had it for approx 7 days and it is extremely uncomfortable and painful .

this I was told by gp is related to fibromyalgia or goes hand in hand as another symptom .

I’m just wondering what advice anyone can give with how to treat it better ?

bonjela and ice lollies isn’t really cutting it .

thank you in advance

Not linked as such but you are more at risk of developing this if you have fibro.

"Burning mouth syndrome usually starts suddenly, for no known reason. But certain factors may increase your risk of developing burning mouth syndrome, including:

Recent illness.

Some long-term medical conditions such as fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, autoimmune disorders and neuropathy.

Previous dental work.

Allergic reactions to food.

Certain medicines.

Traumatic life events.

Stress.

Anxiety.

Depression."

Thankyou for your reply .

I have certainly had a few of those that you have mentioned above . So could possibly be a mix .

It did come on sudden and quick .

And with no medication to treat it just bonjela it’s unbearable .

I suddenly developed a very sore mouth & tongue. I discovered that tap water was the likely cause for me. I found drinking bottled water worked brilliantly. Expensive but I was desperate. I bought 5 litre bottles from the supermarket . I used it to clean my teeth too. Toothpaste was tricky, I used the most natural I could find. I took a few months to recover.

Coincidentally I found that the water pipes locally were leaking & rather than repair them, extra chemicals were addded by Welsh Water. I expect I reacted to them.

Hello and thankyou for your reply, the gp told me it’s related to my fibromyalgia but I have to say I agree with another persons reply further down that maybe a dentist can help .

I was offered no treatment from gp just things to soothe the pain. I have tried anbesol and ice lollies and ibuprofen , nothing really helps the way I need it too .

I will make an appointment with my dentist Monday .

I’m unable to reply to everyone , but hope everyone sees my response and thankyou for advice etc xxx

I get a burning tongue too. I just assumed it was related to fibro and the medication.

Hi I’ve got it and got medication from my dentist and it helps , but it doesn’t totally cure it. So I’d book an appointment with your dentist or phone for advice x

Try your pharmacist , I ve found them too be really helpful , I came off some antiboctics and few days later my tongue burning and roof of mouth was sore , pharmacist gave me ANBESOL which has lidocaine in too numb , abit easier but having natural yogurts , Icecream, and still on the ice lollies . Xx

This can be connected to low vitamins, B vitamins in particular, also low vit D, iron and zinc. Vit B12 deficiency is especially associated with a number of oral symptoms. What were your last set of bloods like and do you supplement already? (Because this can skew the results and make diagnosis a bit harder, but won't necessarily fix the problem). If you don't have results or haven't been tested I'd ask for serum B12, folate (B9), vit D and iron, plus a full blood count. Meanwhile you could try oil pulling with coconut oil (if you are able to tolerate coconut - sesame can help if not.) Best wishes
