MAN FLU ???

Hi all

This is my first post although ive watched and commented on a few posts and my wife lesley wrote a blog few weeks ago about me.

My question is has anybody else found that since having fibro they seem to have realy bad colds/flu one after another with severe facial pain and sinus infections afterwards.

Little concerned here as I Might be leaving myself open to lots of man flu jibes as most sufferers seem to women and im a man. lol

No jibes from me, its awful, since the fibro, I've come down with virus after virus and have always been left with sinusitus after the virus has gone. It's taking longer to get rid off too!!

Morning, I haven had flu but every evening one side of my sinuses fills and blocks and the pains around my face are grim. So something in the sinus I suspect. Hope you feel better for Christmas xgins

I've had a cold and viral chest infection for over two weeks now and have sinusitis now to boot! So also enjoying the flare-up! Normally though I think it is important to measure any cold or bug against someone else who has had it or has it, it may simply be the same as theirs with FM doing a little bit extra, or it maybe beyond that and resting up will be even more important! Hope you feel better soon xx

I have had a reasonably good period so far this winter only one attack of sinisitis, last year I had cold after cold after cold and I had the flu jab which made me feel terrible for a week so this year no flu jab , I,m not at risk I paid for the blooming thing and have been much better without it, though obviously if anyone is in the at risk group don't read this and not get yours go and get it done

Hope everyone who posted feels better soon

Hi thanks for your blog. I thought it was just me having sinisitis!! sometimes I can hardly lift my head for it. The last few months I have also had a chesty cough but only in the mornings, and I keep getting a lump like a part of my oesophagous has jutted out, that,s horrible like I'm choking, I just push it back in then its ok, weird.

Hello and welcome to our lovely forum Thunderchild, you are most welcome here!

Please read our FibroAction Guidelines, you will find these under Blogs at the top, please select FibroAction Blogs and then scroll down. We ask all our new members to read these, many thanks.

If you have any worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask us, we are always only too happy to help. We all understand, we are all in the same boat here.

I hope you enjoy your time at FibroAction! :)

Thank you for your question, we do seem to be more susceptible to cough and colds. Our immune systems can be affected with having Fibromyalgia so this may explain our susceptibility.

I have always been prone to sinus infections, but I can't say they are any worse through having Fibro personally, but as we are all different this will of course vary.

If you have any concerns about getting too many cold and infections, please pop along and speak to your GP to see if they can help you.

You are most welcome here and we will bite our tongues about Man Flu, so please don't worry at all! ;) :)

We welcome anyone with Fibromyalgia, all welcome here! :)

Hope you manage to have a good weekend!

Hi yes I too seem to pick up constant colds chills and viruses and like you they seem to flare up my sinuses resulting in severe pain in and around my face/ cheeks / teeth and in the sinuses above the eyebrow area - ouch ouch ouch!!! I guess our immune systems are already vulnerable due to the fibro so no wonder were prone to picking up every bloody virus thats doing the rounds. Btw hi and welcome to the site and its nice to have a male perspective on fibro even one who's prone to 'man flu' ;-) lol just teasing

Colds a flu do seem to be worse with fibro. I caught a cold/flu last year and I was off uni for three weeks and it should really have been longer as I was still feeling awful. Every time I get a cold or flu, my throat swells up and I end up being sick - for 10 days last time! I started taking my winter vitamins in August this year in the hope of being a bit more germ resistant this year. My GP said if it had been my tonsils I could have had them removed but it isn't so there's nothing they can do.

Welcome thunderchild, my daughter stared nursery sept 2011 & since then it has been none stop colds & chest infections for me resulting in 20 lots of antibiotics :( ive been that bad the dr has put them on repeat for me to order & take as I see fit. I hope your feeling better soon xx

in reply to Fibrofighters

Hello Fibrofighters, I am surprised by any GP prescribing 20 lots of antibiotics for colds and chest infections. Colds and flu are caused by viruses which don't respond to antibiotics. Chest infections can be helped with antibiotics which will help to clear up bacteria, but clearly the infections you have are recurring so the antibiotics you are being given are not getting rid of the root cause.

There is also a danger with taking so many antibiotics that you are building up a resistance to them so they will become ineffective.

For more information on antibiotics please click on the link below which will take you

to an NHS website -

I personally would speak to my GP about concerns regarding taking so many antibiotics. Perhaps there is some underlying cause that you might need checking out for, this might be worth a mention.

To have antibiotics on repeat prescription would personally concern me.

Please let us know how you get on, we are always here for you and we do care about you Fibrofighters.

I have had several different types of antibiotics, the problem is my lungs & immune system are so weak at the min that any cold I get goes straight onto my chest causing an infection & then pneumonia. My asthma has become unstable so my inhalers have been increased to maximum dose seritide 500. The repeat antibiotics are a back up so I always have some at home handy for when they are needed & this is a repeat I've had since may, i only request if I've had to use the antibiotics I have at home. Drs do give antibiotics on repeat to people suffering chronic long term lung problems xx

in reply to Fibrofighters

Oh I see, I understand Fibrofighters, I didn't realise you had underlying conditions too. That explains about your antibiotics' use.

We have to be careful when discussing the use of antibiotics for our other members who might think taking this many is normal in every case when of course it isn't. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to us all. :)

I am so sorry to hear about your health problems, I hope you get the relief and help you need regarding these. Take care. (((hug))) xxx

I don't seem to get more proper colds, but seem to randomly get sinus pain with very little in the way of other symptoms, which is a new thing for me since fibro hit. But we all seem to experience it in slightly different ways, and it's all part of fibro's rich tapestry!

No man-flu jokes here - I can whinge with the best of them when I've got a cold! ;)
