Try a local pharmacy - better with an adjustable stick if you can get one so you can adjust the length. I saw some in a local B&M (I think they're also in N Ireland) for £2.99 a couple of days ago.

I originally spoke with my GP about using one a few years ago so she sent me to get measured for one by the nurse. A few days later I had grandad style wooden walking stick with a crook style handle shoved through my letter box - it was horrendous as well as being a couple of inches too long.

I recently got an ergonomic handled one as the arthritis in my hand was making it sore to use an ordinary one. I bought it on Amazon for £7.99.

Yes, my legs feel quite unsteady for most of the time. When they do feel steady, they "pulse and throb", go hot and cold, pins and needles, shooting pains and then the RLS starts! (Restless Leg Syndrome)

Mine do this a lot too, I've had to use a stick since my knee gave way and I fell in the bathroom some years ago (I had to buy it myself) though I try not to use it indoors - which could be why I fall more indoors than out!

I frequently take what I call an 'impromptu sit-down', when my knees give way and I end up on my bum on the floor! I have to laugh, or I'd be so embarrassed that I'd cry!

Hi Shaz

Yes this happens to me - I get the tingles warning luckily enought so can find somewhere to sit before I fall. I've got a stick and also arm crutches which are invaluable on times. I bought them myself from betterlife.com I think it was - an ebay shop. You should get one it really does help with getting around!

Mandy xx

Yes this happens to me, no warning, just horrendous pain, and gives way. This began about 3 years ago, and was when I gave in to using a walking stick. I had no choice, as I never know when it's going to strike.

Shaz, do you have a disability shop near you? You'll get a stick there, or don't know why, but tobacconist's tend to sell sticks. I've got several now, but bought them all myself. One I use when walking my dogs is a hiking stick, which you'd get at a camping place I would think.

Shoe repairers often sell sticks too.

Shaz theres' some on the internet, I think I'll get one too, I nearly fell over in the supermarket with my daughter. She likes to cook (bake, really),and I went into the supermarket with her till she got some special icing pump stuff, (easy swirl, just looked at it), and on our way out I said to her I'll use the phone on the wall to ring a taxi, well on my way over which was just a few feet away from her, the girl in the kiosk shouted my name and was telling me I did'nt need to phone a taxi, because there's always ones sitting out the back (of the centre) at the same time, my daughter called me from the other side of me, repeating similar, and I was looking both ways confused and swaying back and forth and nearly fell over, my daughter had to run over and catch me. I explained to her later (she's only 18, and a 'young' 18, too, if you know what I mean), anyway I explained to her, that as she knows I'm unwell, and I'm really always dizzy and confused so two people no matter who they are and whether I know them calling me from both sides of me at the same time, will confuse me even further, and probably help me to lose my balance.

Scary isint it? I think I definitely will get a stick too, maybe it will help me to feel more stable, esp when I'm out, my daughter said I was always the same anyway when I'm out, that I never see other people and are always walking into them and falling over, well!, I never knew, and she said I've just only got worse, this past year or two, so I'll have to tell her, that not matter where I am if someone calls me, just to come up to me and even put her arm around me and tell me who is calling me, what they are saying and to hold my arm just like she usually does when I go anywhere with her, because it does'nt take much to get me disoriented and confused, God help us all, and the powers that be think most of us are able for work?, yes I know that's another story, or post. I'm not even able to stand upright for longer that a few mins and even then I very often shake a bit, anyway gentle hugs fellow sufferers, and have a nice day, it' s lovely and sunny here, long may it last xxxxxxx

so sorry to hear your story lv just coz we look well they think we are they want to have a day in our bodies see how they would like it.your daughter seems to be a great help to you.my children are also a great help to me god bless and take care xox

Thank you Shaz, I only read your message now, I very rarely go on my Yahoo which is where I used to get and update on my posts here, (dont know if that's possible anymore really,) so it's only if I read others posts usually I cand spot if someone answered me, at all because I could'nt remember if I answered any post myself.

Yes I love my little 18 year old girl whose a foot taller than me and of course beautiful about 5' 9", and she is very consistant with her love and help, which is good, my sons I found over the years let their testosterone overtake them at times, but my wee daughter thankfully hasnt got any, but my son helps me a lot too, he stays close to me in case I fall or trip over something, well have to say my daughter does too, really. I don't go out much, but I try and go for a walk every 3 days or so, it just gives me some adreneline even if it's only a short walk which it is mostly and I'm usually feeling pretty rotton before hand and afraid I'll fall and do often trip, but dont feel as scared of falling if someone comes with me, and I usually feel good about myself afterwards. I find I have to leave most things to my family because I find I'm so easily confused. But that's another story as we say, Fond regards and take care xxxxx

Hi

I had knee and ankle probs for years before fybro but controllable by excercise regime. After RTA and developing fybro 4 years later I got a neurological disorder called functional weakness. My nerves are all OK but the signal to the brain is not working properly. I "fold" when my brain stops receiving the correct signal of how to walk. Apparently if you have a chronic pain syndrome it is quite common to develop such nasties. I also have incorrect incoming nerve signals and am in constant bee sting or snow burn pain ever since my body learnt the shingles pain! I would suggest gentle excercise to keep joints healthy and muscles to strengthen and support stretchy ligaments. For me having a neurological issue I have to walk against a person, a wall or sticks/walking frame. I am looking into retraining my nerves and attempt new stuff weekly.

Keep trying to strengthen joints but also know when to rest!

Warm thoughts NN :)

Speak with your GP as they may organise an assessment for you.

I found it was the leg fiving way that initially got the doctor to actually take me seriously and send me to rhumatologist. Still happens and weekness comes and goes but does make me fall a lot. Go to your gp and get assessed for a stick. x
