Does anyone know if Fibro can be inherreted, (excuse spelling dyslexic) it does concern me, one of my son's seems to be having the same sort of pains etc that I had whilst growing up ?

There is a thought within the scientific community that a person can have a genetic pre-disposition to Fibro, it doesn't necessarily mean though that a person will get Fibro if one of their parents has it.

There is a positive spin that you can add to that though and it is that YOU know what to watch out for, and if you catch Fibro early, its much easier to manage.

Can you let us know how old your soon is and be more specific with what your son is experiencing?

Hi Simon, he complains of headaches alot, also gets pain in his legs, all over, his back causing him cramping pain, and he doesn't seem to be able to get his sleeping patern correct, however I will point out he also has asperger symdrone. After reading all the responses I am feeling a little easier that its probably his age 20yr just gone, thanks for your info smiles and hugs xx

I've often wondered that about CFS/ME as my 18 year old daughter does sleep for hours and hours and always looks tired; I ought to get her to get her thyroid checked as I know there is a tendency for that to run in families and since me and her Dad as well as his Mother, brother and sister all have thyroid problems she doesn't really stand a chance does she?

It can't hurt to ask your doctor about your son's pains and tell him/her how much like your symptoms they are.

Children and teenagers do often have growth spurts and get growing pains. I have seen kids really suffer (I was a teacher until retiring through ill health) - I was once told their bones grow faster than their muscles and ligaments but I'm not sure if that is actually true.

That's what I've been thinking for the last 5 years lol; I think she is nocturnal hehehe. She does voluntary work at the local British Heart Foundation shop and manages to surface for that and her attendance at college was good - but her results were not so good and she is going back to school next month to boost her UCAS points/grades in order to get on to the degree she really wants next September. She might be tired but she has bottle!

That sounds like my 19 year old son and his older brother at that age too, fairly typical of most teenagers.

Hi Julie, its defo not growing pains, I know when that was happening as both my twins ended up with stretch marks on there back due to this and the pain they get from that is not nice hard as a parent when theres nothing you can do to ease things, but its all part of growing up smiles and hugs xx

I am starting to believe that FM has some genetic factor -- maybe a combination of something inherited with a series of environmental factors coming together. Although my Dad was never diagnosed he seems to have experienced a lot of the symptoms I have (headaches, pains, IBS, etc) but being "a man" he carried on regardless and never talked about them. My younger daughter now in her teens is starting to complain about some of the things I experienced when her age (I think that Puberty appears to accelerate the symptoms as does the Menopause -- all those hormonal changes causing havoc I guess!) and so I am keeping "a close eye" on her whilst trying to "protect" her from the stresses that make my symptoms worse. I also have a cousin (on my Dad's side of the family) who has FM really badly. Maybe get your son to "open up" more to you and talk about how he is feeling because "letting out " all his worries helps to relieve any stress. What age is your son? Maybe it is just a "puberty" thing -- I hope so for his sake xx

I'm sure it can be hereditary there are 3 of us in my generation, me, my brother and a cousin with fibro, another cousin died some years ago from Lupus and I'm sure my Dad has fibro but at 83 no one will bother to check him properly for it When I first started with my symptoms they just palmed me off with the usual "your arthritis is getting worse as you get older". Well arthritis runs rife in my dads family so makes me wonder...how many fibromites were never diagnosed?...

Phlebe, I think my dad had it too, he got cancer of everywhere so it could have been that working on him to but I noticed he seemed to have all the symptoms of fibro for about 4+ years before he died, It always made me sad to think he was depressed, as I then wondered would it have passed down, but I did think as soon as I got the diagnoses of fibro that maybe he actually had that first, as he was a businessman all his life, a hard grafter, and as his business dried up, he suddenly seemed to get all the symptoms of fibro (to me anyway), but I do hope none of my children get it though my 18 year old daughter had her fair share of sickness and she does get very tired after gym or whatever so heres hoping and praying I guess, though she could be hit with something worse too, take care xxxxx
