I've been working on my Gran's (Dad's, Mum) family tree as it's been one big mystery to us all. It has been an immensely satisfying yet extremely frustrating experience!
Her Mum died when she was 4 & her Dad left her in the care of friends and then finally disappeared out of her life by the time she was 11. One problem is that she was born in Northern Ireland (records are a nightmare) and she had very limited knowledge of her family due to the circumstances she was brought in. It hasn't helped that there were only very vague stories about her parents/ grandparents to go on & the details on her Mum's death certificate turned out to be incorrect (she died in Scotland and the death wasn't registered by a family member). Most of my searches have been in County Down & Co Armagh but I may have to have a look in Co Tyrone as well as I think one of her Gran's came from there.
In the last 3 or 4 years I've found out a lot more about her than she ever knew about herself, including who she was named after. Unfortunately I was about 25 years too late to tell her & my Dad what I've found out but at least her 2 surviving daughters now know a wee bit more about their ancestry.
HI Lally I too would love to do this I get so far and then get a huge block, I wish you lots of luck and fun. x x x x
