I have had cars on the scheme for the last 18 years & it has been a god send, as I need automatic & quickly also needed hand controls , knowing that I have a new car every 3 years, with insurance, tax, maintainance, RAC/AA. Cover all included means totally worry free driving for me. Of course it is loss os most if not all your high rate mobility component of DLA but do many cars to choose from & now luckily lots of autos on nil advance deposit like loads of manual cars are. I have Nissan Note which is great cos hi off ground do easy to get in and out of without having to hall yourself up from low seat. If you require more than just a basic car due to your health needs, it's advisable to go to access ment centre to make sure hour getting z car suitable for your needs as obviously you are committing to it for 3 years, Motability do sometimes cancel a contract early if nevessary. Sorry of I've rambled on or if some words don't make sense I'm typing on I phone after having had no sleep since sunday so maybe words a bit haywire but did try to check as I went along lol if anything doesn't make sense write in reply n will try to desiphet although sometes I can't understand my own txts n posts lol hoe I have helped Karen

Your not rambling, your reply has been very re-assuring. I have always driven an auto and now "Have" to drive one. My old car "died" in Feb and I have been virtually house bound since, and I hate relying on friends/family all the time. I will now get myself a car. Thank you.

I have a car and its great you don't have to worry about anything just put the petrol in and go. I have an automatic because i have arthritis in my knees. You also have a great choice of cars. I would say go for it its the best thing i have done.

Hi Siver52,

There is no doubt that the Motability scheme is a great idea. However, there a few things you need to be aware of:-

Motability advise that:-

There is no upper age limit.

As long as you receive the Higher Mobility component of DLA allowances, you are eligible for the Scheme.

Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease cars, scooters or powered wheelchairs through Motability.

To lease a car through Motability you must have at least 12 months' award length remaining. Only the Higher Rate Mobility Component is used. Other parts of the DLA are not affected.

So, the oldest you can be to have DLA that qualifies is 64 and you will only qualify until your DLA stops.

Which means, you really need a long term (preferably indefinite) award to keep your car well past age 65, because as soon as it ceases you will lose it.

happy hugs, kate :)

I don't know what I would do without my Motability car - it's my passport to the outside world. And I'm frightened I might lose it under PIP.
