Travelling (6+ hour train journey!)

I'm travelling from Wales to York on the weekend, realistically I'm probably not well enough haha, but for the sake of my mental health I feel like I really need this trip!

Any tips/ideas for comfort or making travelling easier? I'm used to driving places, this is my first long journey on a train.

Oh definitely a cushion, blanket and loads of painkillers!!!! Have a lovely time x oh flask of tea and food xxx

Make sure you give yourself enough time to get over the potential stress on your body and mind to recover.If I know I have day of extra exertion I make sure I have a day or two of extra slowness and rest following this to let myself recover

But also - go and have a wonderful time.

Have you arranged for disabled assistance at either end of your journey (depending on size of station this might be taking you in trolley from entrance to platform or even just helping you on train with any luggage). Extra pain meds, heat pads, cushion, something to distract yourself during journey, drinks/snacks etc). Get up regularly and move about so you do not get too stiff from sitting.

I have my wireless TENS devices already attached before setting off and take plenty of water including 2 flasks of boiling and my portable coffee machine which I cannot survive without. With my headphones and my playlists plus plenty of crosswords for distraction I'm ready to go.

just doing the trip will make you feel so much better, it’s good for us to have something to look forward to and enjoy just at your own pace , enjoy 😊

HiMake sure you have enough medication with you.

Stay warm,wear loose fitting comfortable clothes,take plenty of fluids to drink,pace yourself,try moving around alittle while in transit.

Good for you 👍 I am sure you will enjoy it. Stretching exercises will support your pain levels and rubbing your muscles in your legs . all exercises can be done sitting down. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Listen to music with headphones which will help you relax or listening books. Moving Everyhour will support you. Standing or sitting 🤔 when you are struggling with pain. Keeping warm is key therefore wear warm clothes is needed. Plan your mindset to enjoy yourself whatever and it's good to keep pushing yourself and try and forget some of your pain.

Be positive and just be comfortable with your journey and enjoying the event as much as you can. Good luck 👍

Some good replies from members and I agree have time out at the end of your journey, trains can be quite drafty so some thick socks may help, a change of scenery is differently a postive. Thing. Have a lovely restful time xx

take your own food and cold drinks - hopefully there will be a trolly service, but it's worth speaking to the conductor and advising of your invisible (to most) disability.

fingers crossed for your journey - York is (for once) not flooded after the storm yesterday!

take a neck pillow to support your head, I find traveling having to hold my head up causes lots bnk of pain in my traps, a neck pillow will help avoid this and make you more comfortable on the journey

Brave lady! May it all be going well. I'm writing this on a very windy day and I know how much courage it takes to travel anyway. May this be your first of many journeys back to some of the freedom you have had before. 🕊️🕊️

Hi Retnefel, my tip for you is to make sure you wear a tracksuit or something really comfy. You will be surprised what a difference that makes to traveling with chronic illness to feel comfortable in what you are wearing.

It's important whatever you wear that is warm as feeling cold can trigger your symptoms. I recommend layers so if it's hot on the train you can take top layers off, again, being too hot can make you feel bad.

You can book free passenger assistance at the station if you need it. They will meet you, take care of your luggage and put it on the train for you, and get you seated on the train. Book at the other end too so they meet your train, help you to get off and also carry your luggage off.

Make sure you have something to eat and drink with you for the long journey. I find it helpful to eat something every 2 to 3 hours rather than eating 3 meals a day.

I like to have magazines with me. I often can't focus enough to read a novel but short articles can keep me interested and help me to pass the time. All the best for your trip and I hope what I have said is helpful. Hugs Elaine xx 🤗
