I have a question about toothache. I was up most of last night with toothache which feels like an infection for which I have had to have root canal in the past. Well I went to the dentist today and she showed me that that tooth has already been root treated and it is fine. So I should be feeling any pain. She also couldn't see an infection. She gave me antibiotics to take and if they don't get rid then it's to come out!
To be honest, I forgot to say I had fibromyalgia, my brain fog is so bad. But I'm sure it's on my records. I have been taking cocodamol and ibuprofen and they seem to take the pain away, which makes me think it's not fibro pain as normally they do nothing. I am confused lol has anyone else experienced toothache? Should I take the antibiotics?
Thanks
Emma

early on in my fibro journey I was referred to Kings College Dental hospital, after many extractions due to pain I was no better off. Eventually put down to fibro nerve pain. Tried gabapentin and pregablin but side effects too bad for me.
Only you can decide whether or not to take the medication. To be honest I’m surprised antibiotics were prescribed as we are always being told not to take them unless infection is confirmed.
I share your pain. Usually first thing in the morning my teeth can be extremely tender. It's never just one tooth but many.
I should say, I used to be a dental nurse so my teeth have always been well looked after. My previous dentist retired but he reassured me that it was fibromyalgia pain. He had reluctantly been persuaded by his father-in-law to remove 2 of his teeth. He said he had advised against it. His father-in-law had fibro. The man still had pain after the extractions.
It's such a horrible, puzzling condition we live with.
Oh yes and I have Bruxism so do this and grind teeth all night . forgot this when I replied just now .They made a special mouth guard for me but I struggle to use it , maybe one would help you though.
hi Emma , yes I do . Fortunately I have the most compassionate dentist who understands fibromyalgia better than any gp if I’m honest. During a flare up my “ jangly nerves” achy up as he calls it . I’m just back from the dentist he took X-rays to be sure , I had a tiny issue near the area causing me pain but the nerves are all connected there . Anti inflammatory helps a little and rubbing sensodine in helps too . Rest all you can and if you’re still in pain try a different dentist explain fibro and nerve pain just don’t be rushed into extraction . Good luck , xx dental pain is awful I’m sorry , gentle hugs
Sorry you are in more pain with this. I also suffer jaw pain problems having Post juvenile periodontitis another ' ITIS ' to suffer. Have you tried warm salt water a good few times a day for a while This may help. I was sent to Kings college Dental Hospital from my mid twenties now too far for me I have special care type denstistry nearer to where I live now. Have to do constant special type cleaning and care of my mouth every day. Same with eyes as have Blepharitis another ' ITIS' Hopefully it will settle down soon Extra pain seems to crop up anywhere anytime.
Morning I had what I thought was toothache but my dentist said everything was fine. He thought it could be sinusitis & my Doctor confirmed this & gave me antibiotics which cleared it . Dentist suggested using Sensodyne toothpaste.
Hello & sorry to hear of your pain.Ibuprofen is excellent as a analgesic antiflamatory but following the dosage on the packet as they are bad for ones kidney.
Recommended usage 3 days and no more.
Can cause a bad tummy being constipation and otherwise.
Fibromyalgia can mimic toothache most definitely and oral facial pain.
Many years ago I had Glandular Fever (EBV/Mono) VERY severely; to such an extent that I had to gargle with bleach in order to keep my throat open. A dentist was called to shave my teeth as my gums had become so inflamed they were 'growing' over my teeth. (My fault for not admitting I was ill earlier - female in Naval/man's World). The dentist recognised the work of the Epstein Barr Virus.
EBV is one of those viruses that never clears the body and can 'sleep' in areas such as the sinuses. Having spoken to my former GP, the virus can recur later in life and/or when the body comes under stress.
There is a strong correlation between early-life EBV and FM (N.B. Correlation does not prove cause, but it may be that EBV has some sort of relationship with whatever causes FM).
I also suffer from CFS and know that if I 'overdo' anything, the CFS fatigue and FM pain overwhelm me. Then, Oh Joy!, I get toothache, particularly in my upper jaw, along with swollen glands in my neck and underarms. (Mentioning this to my GP and saying how similar the symptoms were to Glandular Fever, I asked if it could come back. Her simple "Yes", spoke volumes.)
As you know, although antibiotics can remove bacterial infection, they can't help treat EBV. I use pure Propolis capsules which seems to help - and, of course, REST. (Please be aware that it you are allergic to tree pollen, you may react to Propolis; though I have no idea how you'll know this unless you chew a log!?)
I'm sorry I couldn't bring happier news, or a quick fix, but I hope the info. helps.
I wish you a restful, relieving day. Dee
P.S. There is also a connection between EBV and Periodontitis - something to do with Butyric Acid - which may mean our teeth are impacted too. (There's loads more info available online in medical papers.)
Wow that's a lot to deal with 😔 I am sorry to hear you are going through all that. I will have a look and speak to my dentist next week. Thank you for sharing that
I had toothache continuously for 12 months. Turned out it was an abscess under a wisdom tooth, but the pain never centred on that tooth. Meanwhile I had 2 other teeth out. I had a full mouth x ray at maxillo facial and that is what showed the problem.
If you don’t think it’s fibro pain, then get reffered for a full mouth x ray, rather than the little ones the dentists do.
Hiya 😊 thank you. Yes they have the big machine at my dentists surgery, so I wil speak to my dentist next week! I didn't think fibro could be causing it so I never mentioned it, although it's on my records and they didn't either lol and i forgot to mention it as my brain fog is shocking at the moment. It was a different dentist I saw so I will speak to my own. It feels more like the gums than tooth pain. It moves about upper and lower right. Blooming annoying 😑 I'm taking the penicillin just incase it is an infection, but if it comes back then I won't be getting the tooth out as there is nothing wrong with it.
I seem to have the similar thing, by midday I have all my top jaw in pain and then a real headache along with my eyes. But I have found out that I do get ghost pain were there are no teeth. Hope this helps
I've been having toothache in my back wisdom tooth I had an emergency appointment and was prescribed antibiotics and told they don't take wisdom teeth out. I ended up going to the doctor's and they prescribed naproxen for four weeks it's really helped settle the pain down. I hope you manage to get some relief from your tooth pain .
Hi Pony, when I was a child somewhere along the line I learned not to complain nor mention any pain or injuries (if I could hide it). I don’t know why? Anyway as a teenager I had some tooth aches which (if I waited long enough it would go away this applied to any pain) which it did. Fast forward to age 31 I went to the dentist who said the pain and X-ray looked like an abscess. On physical examination the tooth itself was not sensitive. The dentist said sometimes a sinus infection can mask itself as an abscess so he prescribed antibiotics which took the pain away. This explained all my previous toothaches I had come and go earlier in life. So take the antibiotics it just could be a sinus infection with a much simpler cure. I was relieved to learn this at age 31 because 1 it had been a few years since I had been to the dentist and 2 my dad was a dentist so I said I can’t have an abscess. 😳 🦷 I did not have fibromyalgia (that I knew of) nor ever heard of fibromyalgia even though I was a nurse. This was in 92 it wasn’t until 94 when I first heard of fibromyalgia and later diagnosed with it in 94.
