Both thumbs and elbows - the doc reckons it is my arthritis - but touch and ouch is the routine

Makes it hard to use my hands a lot of the time

Take care

Hi, I had this a few years ago and it was a good while until I managed to get an appointment but was so unbearable with the pain all the time. I was eventually diagnosed with trigger thumb. I had injections in the area and it worked brilliantly 🙏I think if I remember rightly they may have been hydrocortisone🤔injections. The dr explained it was similar to repetitive strain as I am a carer and move and handle people with a hoist and do this frequently every day at work. He said it was most common in nurses due to the repetitive movements. Hope this helps xx

Do you know what my (now thankfully retired ) GP would say to that. If it hurts to poke it; STOP POKING IT. I mean just to make you smile.

Hand issues can be from alsorts but when you have eliminated the obvious, you can look elsewhere, I suggest higher? Neck is a common cause? All this carpel tunnel, people get operated for, is often from the neck. Becomes more obvious that it isn't a wrist issue after the op doesn't fix it. Oopsie?

Maybe look on line, Brad and Bob on you tube or others? See what they say? I came across a hand issue and it was caused by Thoracic outlet syndrome. A pinch high up on a nerve in the neck. (The right exercises can help). Worth a read to understand how these sort of things occur? But obviously not saying your issue is this, just you know; Pain is not always triggered exactly where the pain is happening.

BTW Stop Poking! 😄

Your 1st paragraph made me laugh 😃 and reminded me of a GP I had in the 1970s when I was in my early 20s, I used to suffer with pains in my knees especially when getting up from a kneeling position - his answer was don't kneel! 😁

Interesting Thank you. I had a whiplash and think this may be relevant to me.

I have the same. Rheumatology Consultant said it’s often the first joint to have arthritis. 😢

I suspect supporting the joint with gentle targeted exercises or stretches allowing the muscles to be at their healthiest might be the way to go? I mean enabling all the muscles in the arm to support the tiddly ones and thus supporting the joint itself? I have found there are exercises that seem to do that for different parts of the bod. All carefully and sensitively done of course! I worry that Drs tend to act as though there is little but pain meds for arthritis, that might help when actually, remaining a fit as we can is still beneficial. Just because Arthritis is degenerative doesn't mean we cant help the body heal that area to.

The trick is finding what works for you given your individual issues. Every time we exercise our bods, we bring clean fresh life giving bl00d with all those amazing nutrients to the area being targeted. It also allows the lymphatics to clear the debris and sludge. Probaly I'm telling what you already know but if it helps one other person reading this to be brave enough to start mindfully and carefully getting active/ more active, I'll take the risk. You don't mind do you? When fibros are suffering, they need all the help they can get to find their way out.

Arthritis does seem to attract fibro to run along side it's already nasty condition. While there may be no cure, for Fibro there is always lots of room for improvement.

Sorry to hear you're In pain with your thumb. Something like this happened to be and it was carpel tunnel and therefore so painful at times.

My GP put me forward for the simple operation which took place a couple of months ago. This was a simple operation and my hand is so much better. I am due to have my right hand done as well. The surgeon was fantastic and the staff very kind . Go and see your GP and request to be put forward for the operation. You will see the benefits with in a few weeks. Good luck and stay safe.

I can't do operations especially if I have to be awake my anxiety would hit the roof .Am hoping it's not carpel tunnel .

I have the same problem and was diagnosed with osteo- arthritis. I use compression gloves when its at its worst which does help. Sometimes I even sleep with them on. I bought mine on Amazon. They are washable and usually available in black or grey. I have several pairs and always carry some in my bag whenever I go out in case of a flare up.

Yes I do. Been having it for about 5 years now. Zero reference to fibromyalgia, but explained away as part of my trigger thumb becoming worse. Yet Rheumatology consultant states its part of fibromyalgia, as is the arthritis i have. This started in my fore finger on my left hand, then travelled to the next 2 fingers. I then got it the same way my my right hand. Interestingly, it never seems to affect both little fingers 🤔 which is where my rheumatoid arthritis began decades ago. But it can rapidly go into both hands within hours, if not days 😣

During Covid it was at its worst & I was told to buy the splints myself which angered me greatly. I hope you'll get the splints on prescription as its ridiculous that I got 1 pair, not realising they need washing & I'd still need to wear them. I only wear them when my pain is really bad, and when the pain goes back to just rheumatic pain as it doesn't help with arthritis, vso i just put them away until next time. All the best 😍

Hi Tommy girlI was having tests for carpal tunnel and I mentioned the pain in my thumb as you describe. I was told it was related to the carpal tunnel, however, when I went to see a hand surgeon about the operation for carpal tunnel, he said it was an entirely different thing. It's called de quervain's syndrome. He gave me a steroid injection immediately and pain improved in 36 hrs and is no longer a problem. I was unable to butter bread or cut up my food. Ask for a consultation with a hand surgeon, physio got it wrong!! Good luck

I’ve recently had the operation for de quervains . It ended up affecting my whole arm. It happens because the tendons get trapped, not the same as carpal tunnel. Tiny scar and the pain has all gone.
