your not alone. I get phantom smells but mine is like someone’s smoking. We don’t smoke and neither does our neighbours. I’ve even had it in Tesco while shopping. It’s not constantly, just appears at random.
Omg I get this. I’m obsessed with my house smelling nice but every now and then it smells like someone has been smoking, or at least I think it does. I’ve asked my friends if they can smell it and they just look at me like I’m crazy. None of my friends or family smoke so there’s no reason it would smell. I get lots of other random smells at odd times but the cigarette smoke is one I smell the most and only in my front room.
Yes! Mine is a smell of burning which worries me 'cos my late uncle told me he had the same smell just before he had a heart attack. So, of course, I panic that a heart attack looms for me - especially when I have chest, rib and back pains at the same time as the 'smell'. However, I am still here but I still worry every time!
Me too, but mine smells of burning fire, like on bonfire night. My family thought I was going nuts at first, no-one else could smell it!!! It comes and goes, sometimes months apart.I visited the GP about something else and just asked about this, he asked if I'd had covid? He explained that its sometimes an after effect from covid 🤔
I’ve had this in the past . Smelled smoke for months, really strongly. It just went away. I do get migraines and I thought it was related to that as although I don’t get bad headaches any more I get lots of auras which cause weird smells and sensations.
yes! Like someone is smoking. We don’t smoke when it first started I was going round the house sniffing trying tofind where it was coming from. It comes and goes but yet another strange symptom with no explanation.
Hello Sleepyhead, I am glad to read you and others experience this, too. Well, not glad for you! But at least I now know I am not alone in this. I have had phantom smells for some years, pre-dating the covid era, and at times it drives me potty. Some days, usually later morning or late afternoon, I get an onset of a very, very mature cheese combined with something even more foul/rotten smell. It wafts on and off for several hours. Occasionally I get cigar smoke - certainly no smokers around here - or, as a special treat, something pleasant, perhaps a floral or even exotic perfume smell. I've smelt summer jasmine in full flower in the depths of winter.
I guess it's my fibromyalgia combined with my FND ( Functional Neurological Disorder). Reading this post and replies has got me thinking: perhaps I might try nasal irrigation as an experiment next time the foul smell arises. Just to see if there is any effect.
Gosh I’m so glad to hear this as I’ve been experiencing this and really thought I was going mad, I keep asking my husband if he can smell anything, mines a sort of sweet smell. I also get a lot of mouth ulcers that come and go!
Yes, me too. I smell people smoking cigarettes a lot, and neither of us smokes. I often smell pipe tobacco, but I find that comforting; it reminds me of my youngest daughter's granddad, who always looked out for me.
it may also be your daughters grandad around you in spirit this is how they show us they are around it relates to some of the comments on this thread I think not everything is fibro related it happens to me as well
Hi I get them, it was one of the deciding factors in my diagnosis. I had over sensitivity to some smells and sounds ( espcially high pitched ones) . I often smell rotton cabbage or off meat when there is none, it makes me feel nauseous. I can snell other people sweat when others can't and I've had the gas smell a lot recently in my mum's house which I'm currently emptying. I hear high pitched noises too sometimes that many others don't hear...like my dogs whistle and some alarms . My GP says its because senses can be over sensitive just like the nerves etc can for pain.
This 'might' be something to do with our survival mechanisms. I'm no expert in that but I know I have a far better sense of smell than my hubs and that is why I smelt the start of a fire in the kitchen when he was running the oven on heat clean and he had left an oven cloth hanging on the door which had fallen off in flames. No harm done I may say!
Trust yourself that this ability will work for you if you ever seriously need it. It's an unwelcome gift to you right now but perhaps someone in your family also has it too. -My mum had the trait and my sister was supersensitive, and to touch as well as smell.
Something that you might therefore, actually, enjoy is an essential oil diffuser which is a safer way to burn oils. I have a plug in one with a wide base from Amazon and put in a few drops of something like lavender or sandalwood oil in water inside it to encourage sleep or at least relaxation. I don't use it a lot in daytime but when I do there is wonderful calming melissa (lemon balm) and some people really go for ylang ylang which is very strong. Nice at night with that stuff diffusing on on my right side and soft sleep music or sea sounds going on on the left.
Hi ! Yes, I'm another person who gets random smoking smells. Really weird, I was convinced I had a smoking ghost....haha... it comes and goes, not had it for a while though.
