Thanks Des, I have to change my mattress soon, it's nearly 16 years old! Interesting read, I have a firmish hybrid mattress and reluctant to change it as it's been very comfortable - looks like it'll be another hybrid for me!

I have an ergo flex mattress, and I also splashed out on 2 of the pillows. I also have a weighted blanket I use folded, sometimes by 3, over my legs - best up to just over my knees. This is what works for me - not always perfect, but far better for me than without x

Hi,

I understand your frustration as I had the same problem a few years ago until I met a very knowledgeable bed sales person. I had brought a memory foam mattress and paid over £1,400 and struggled to get comfortable and struggled to turn or move on it. Memory foam reacts to your body heat and moulds to your body which means when you move it is hard to move out of the mould and as a consequence I woke every morning feeling tired and felt like I had strained muscles. I also found the mattress made me feel hot. I changed to a 3,000 pocket sprung mattress and can honestly say I now sleep much better and don’t wake up feeling exhausted or hot and can change positions without feeling like I’d done a 2 hour workout before getting out of bed every morning. I’m sure that there are people who love memory foam, but for me personally I struggled to find any benefits.

In the early days of memory foam I had a wonderful bed, supported my aching bones and even through the menopause I wasn't too hot! Bought a newer one and it was awful, all of the issues you had and more. I had to buy a new bed for my old Mum and went to a bed store where the chap discussed her needs and picked out a selection for her to test. During this I mentioned my bed and he suggested I try a ? sprung mattress with a gel topping and I bought it on the spot, 5 years on this is still the most comfy and supportive bed for my needs. We both did well that day. A knowledgable bed sales person is worth their weight in gold.

Hi, I also have fibromyalgia and was struggling to sleep due to pain at night. I recently bought the best mattress I have ever had. It is a firm latex clima cool mattress. It may take a bit of getting used to if you are not used to a firm mattress but it has definitely improved the quality of my sleep. I think a mattress is a personal thing with each of us having a different preference but a firm mattress provides better support. It also stops that rolling into each other if you have a partner. My partner is 6ft 4 and carries a few extra pounds where as I am 5ft 1, but no more rolling into the dip. He doesn't have fibromyalgia but agrees it is the best night sleep he has had too. I hope this is helpful and that you manage to find a mattress that's right for you. A good nights sleep is so important.

I find a too soft mattress just doesn't support your body enough. I've tried several along with memory foam ones and gel and they all caused me more pain. Trying to turn over was a nightmare if its too sloppy. I'd say a medium to firm is the way to go and can always put a topper on if needs a little adjustment.

Hello, your post was very familiar to me as I also have fibromyalgia and I had exactly the same problems finding a mattress that suited me.

I returned an Emma mattress that I found very hot to sleep on.

Then I splashed out on an American brand called Dream Cloud. Very expensive for my budget but apparently, according to reviews, there are constant offers for special prices.

Anyway, I bought it and put it on a new sprung divan base ( I’d previously used a slatted base) and so far ( a month now) the little sleep I do get is better than before.

DreamCloud offer a 365day return and refund scheme. It also has a lifetime warranty for any fault that’s found with the mattress.

I can’t seem to post a link here but, if you are interested, do a search for DreamCloud mattress and read independent reviews online for it. It scores very highly…they can’t all be wrong!

It is delivered in a box on a day of your choice by courier who brings it to your own front-door, even in flats.

Very heavy! It takes two to open it up as it has a life of its own when you remove the wrappings.

It’s made from hypoallergenic materials which do not ‘off-gas’ so no nasty smells or potential health issues from allergies.

Anyway. Long post! Hope you find a mattress that suits you.

Hoping that your pains lessen soon.

K.

What about a mattress topper. I’m finding it easier to move in the morning since I brought mine however I still have pain in the hips if I’m in one position too long. I researched toppers that could help and were in my price range

I have a Hypnos wool mattress origins 6 and also a wool mattress topper from Devon Duvets, wool is lovely to sleep on keeps you cool and is so comfortable . I also have a weighted blanket and use linen bedding as it’s breathable and again keeps you cool but also warm in winter! I sleep so much better since buying this mattress !
