Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis

Good morning, hope you are all as well as can be. Can anyone tell me if they suffer from both fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis? I was diagnosed fibromyalgia early this year but have now been referred back to Rheumatology due to swelling and ongoing stiffness in my joints. I also suffer with groin pain almost everyday.

Hi Marieg1270, Yes I have both. The arthritis is severe in my left hand(I only have 1 hand) and moderate in my left foot, right elbow and knee. It's not always possible to tell which condition is flaring so you just need to be kind to yourself when anything does. The groin pain could be transferred pain from one of your leg joints at a guess. It would be worth getting it checked out. With osteoarthritis the rheumatologist sign you off asap in my experience. I haven't been able to see one since 2000 when they diagnosed arthritis in my knee! The GP will be expected to take over your care. I haven't seen a rheumatologist about my fibro for even longer. I hope you get better care than I have had. Good luck

yes I have both but I honestly think the two are linked - mostly in my spine, more recently both my knees and hands.

My sister is the same however her rheumatologist treats her with RA drugs but says it’s not RA abut possibly fibro.

There is ongoing research that fibro is possibly autoimmune.

they are not linked in any specific was for some arthritic conditions you will have a higher risk of developing fibro. And if you have both then your fibro is likely to amplify the pain.

Treating fibro with RA drugs and in particular biologics has not shown any benefits.

hi, yes I have both, together with RA and underactive thyroid. Not always easy to determine which condition is causing which pain/symptom!

Hey yes I do. Osteoarthritis first then diagnosed later with fibromyalgia. Difficult sometimes to work out which is causing pain.

Hi ,yes I also have fybro and osteoarthritis in my knees, hips and lower back. The sad thing is recently my orthopedic surgeon said, he doesn't think they will agree to do a hip replacement , because it might do more harm than good 😕. Firstly because of fybro and also because of my other health conditions. Somehow I had a feeling that's what he is going to say but I was hoping. Having arthritis in the hips it's not a joke as it can make me immobile when it flares up on top of fybro. So good luck to all of us, just remember we can do it ,we are strong 💪 and motivated. Take care 🙂.

Arthritis is definitely different pain than fybro and I feel it in different positions. It's only a throbing pain when it's flared up badly. That throbing pain it's like someone is pressing on a bruise. You will know it's different. You can always ask for second opinion. I did when I was diagnosed with fybro. All the best 🙂.

Diagnosed with fibromyalgia 13 years ago and had groin pain for most of that time. Pain now goes from there to my legs if I try to walk more than a few yards so I now have to use a mobility scooter or wheelchair if I go out. I have had numerous X-rays over the years but nothing has shown up on my hips. I take Pregabalin and duloxetine but they don't seem to help much. Co-Codamol low dose helps a bit to dull the pain so it is bearable. Hope you find something that helps you.

Hi… yes I have both conditions. I was diagnosed with arthritis first and had to have back surgery 13yrs ago and then a few years later I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I’ve had hip pains all my life and 5yrs ago had to have surgery on my hip to fix a labral tear in my hip and to have my femur scraped to remove the arthritic deformities so it would sit in the socket better. It was the worst decision to have the surgery! My hip is worse then ever and I can’t have a new hip because they think the trauma of that on top of my fibromyalgia has resulted in the amount of pain I’m in now. If I go out I need to use a wheelchair now. My other hip is now as bad as my hip I had surgery on but we are leaving that one alone. The pain is deep in the groin from labral tears so it could possibly be that with arthritis like myself. I also have arthritis in my shoulders, hands and knees. It’s a case of keeping warm and getting plenty of rest. I haven’t been able to work since my hip started getting worse 5yrs ago. Good luck with everything ☺️

Hi there I too suffer with both , in both my knees and both hips, the groin pain could possibly relate to your hips so it’s good you are seeing a rheumatologist he hopefully will give you some answers, in my experience having both conditions stiffness is more than likely to be the osteoarthritis but it could also be the fibro it’s a minefield really lol… hope you get some help from rheumatologist and in the meantime keep yourself mobile as much as you can

Yes, I have both. Also been told that the groin pain is arthritis. Also have Rheumatoid arthritis in both hands. It's taken the best part of 2 decades to get these diagnosis. Hope you fair better than I did with getting help for your conditions. All the best.

Yes, I have fibomyralgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis, very painful indeed, naproxen helped with swelling of joints, but you need a stomach protector as hard on stomach, and maybe another form of pain relief if not on one already. I find heat helps with that, heated blanket xxxx
