Fibromyalgia and swimming.

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone can help me. I suffer from fibromyalgia and other deficiencies and I am on PIP. I heard that swimming can be good for fibro sufferers and keeping off the weight that seems to be piling on since I was diagnosed. I have heard that if you are registered disabled you can get discount for swimming. Is this true and how would I go about getting it?

Thanks in advance

Rebecca. X

Hello Rebecca and welcome to our friendly forum 😊

Just in case you would like to take a look at our mother site for the forum please go to fmauk.org where you will find lots of useful information about fibro.

I know that swimming has helped a number of our members, as you say it is a non weight bearing, and thus a safer form of exercise as you are supported by the water.

You mention about getting a discount, sadly I can't help you on that, but I do know your GP can refer you to Physios who can usually then arrange hydrotherapy, which is of course free. I hope someone with a bit more knowledge on this will come along with better information on this.

Sadly I had to give up swimming all together as having been a county level swimmer in my youth, I have ended up with arthritis in both shoulders, my left one was replaced 5 years ago (goodness doesn't time fly?) and the right one is heading the same way at breakneck speed.........I can't tell you how I long to get into the pool and swim a mile a day which I did for years, sadly just even a couple of lengths renders me in agony. However i think it is a fabulous form of exercise and will help with your weight gain too. Do let us know how you get on 😊😊

Foggy x

Hi Rebecca1891

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? Welcome to the forum and it is wonderful to make your acquaintance.

I know where I live in Derby, the local council do offer discounts to disabled people for a variety of things including swimming. I would ring your local authority and ask them if they offer discounts on swimming? In Derby we have what is called a 'Gold Card' which is your disabled bus pass and this is the I.D used to get the discounts.

I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Hi I have started swimming again aftet a 10 year break, has it helped I think so but I'm still suffering with pain. My local pool charges me a third of the price and my wife/career goes free, ring up or pop in to your local pool and see what they can offer you.

I'm not sure about a discount but I swim regularly, it's the only exercise that I can do pain free, and to me that's invaluable. Even on a really bad day, it makes me feel so much better after a swim.

Quite a few councils have a discount card for activities like swimming. They all operate differently so certainly worth enquiring about you will probably find the details on your local council site. Some GP,s offer a number of sessions on prescription.

Mayrose suggestion about hydrotherapy could certainly be a good one to follow-up on as I found it so beneficial. I was referred for it by the physio and it was marvellous to exercise in the lovely warm, deep water as everything was easier to do as there is no unnecessary pressure on the joints and th sessions are normally supervised by a trainedhysip who can show you exactly how to do them.

I find that water in the majority of swimming baths too cold for unfortunately. Good luck with it.x
