Does anyone else regularly doze off on the sofa or in a chair?

Can't be alone here, but I seem to fall asleep at the drop of a hat nowadays. Seems to happen so quickly I don't even feel myself drifting. Somedays I even wake up with a lapful of tea/coffee because I've nodded off with the mug in my hand.

Is anyone else like this?

I got caught by my boss twice at the desk asleep 😴, that's why I had to reduce my work days.

Yup, happens alot, but when move to bed - eyes wide open and insomnia is back...Now my family just leave the room where I have fallen asleep, don't even thatch me and leave me to rest, its never for more than an hour, but it's a gods gift for someone with a sleeping problem.

Yes, I've even fallen asleep while I'm talking to someone. Anytime of the day or evening

Hi

Do you feel woozy as well. I do nod off through exhaustion because I'm awake in pain every night with my many conditions. I have one hour or less sleep per night due to pain. I did burn myself badly on black coffee, had to have the burn dressed each day. Also, I zone out when I'm talking to someone. One minute I'm talking, the next I'm on the floor!! I've fallen off the toilet many a time!! I've cracked a rib, split my head open and bruised my back badly after falling part way down my son's stairs!! Does it stop you doing things? I can't cook unless someone is by my side. Do you have any other health concerns? I've got a whooshing sound in both ears, when I lie on my ear it seems to pulse in time with my heart beat!! My optician said I have got droopy eyelids, plus I have blurred vision!! I'm under the hospital for my ears and eyes though I do think my droopy eyelids are down to plain and simple tiredness!! I have many other conditions too like I'm sure everyone else does on here. I have osteoarthritis of the knees and wrists, sciatica, IBS, diverticulitis, severe constipation, spondylitis, degeneration of the facet joint, gastritis, costochondritis, under active thyroid, fibromyalgia, compensated cirrhosis caused by meds from my Drs over the years, then of course my ears and eyes I'm really sorry for going on!! Those that know me well are used to me going off on a tangent!! I get carried away 😂🤦🤣🤷

I'm very lucky to have a fantastic support network of family and friends. I had to take ill health retirement 5 years ago, my boss tried everything to keep me. I will keep smiling 😊 because moping around won't change anything!! I make myself go out even when I don't feel like it because I know I will enjoy it when I get there. There I go again, off on a tangent 🤣😂 I will shut up now!! Lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxx 💜🫂💟🫂

Hi, I get this usually about 3pm in the afternoon. Sometimes I try to fight it . But other times it can come on all a sudden even if I have bean for a little walk. But when it's time for bed I struggle to sleep.

Oh if only I can't sleep during the day no matter how tired and exhausted I am have always been so envious of people who can just nap at any time!

At last, I keep thinking this has to be caused by something else, because as you say you can go from drowsy to unconscious basically in a split second.

Welcome to the hot tea in lap club!

I remember waking up once as I keeled over on the sofa. I did laugh but actually it’s a serious matter.

I wake up choking when my head is bent to my chest, no doubt reducing my oxygen intake, or my head back so when I rouse it’s so painful.

Much more worrying is if I’m washing up in the sink and my legs give way and wakes me up or the one I fear most, that I may topple off the loo and crack my head.

I haven’t read the other replies yet but sure others have this experience.

I’m slowly investigating this as it’s an aspect that doesn’t seem to be given the attention and research it needs to.

Hi HB63.It happens to me all the time but I put mine down to the fact my insomnia is playing up & sleep is a premium & if I end up napping I see it as a win.

Oh yessss! I know that happens to me daily.!

I fight the tiredness because I need to try to sleep at night (never can sleep before 2 or 3am) but sometimes, like you, if I’m relaxed in a chair I just drop unconscious without even feeling drowsy. Micro sleeps.

Luckily it doesn’t happen when I’m out or driving or talking to someone, otherwise I’d worry about using my car!

Review for Sleep Apnoea coming up very soon, maybe they can fine tune the CPAP machine and mask so any sleep I get at night is more consistent.

Sleep Apnoea along with Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS….probably all co-dependant.

Fun! :-D

I live in my bedroom, mostly but I try to sit in my chair while I'm knitting ,

The amount of times Iv'e pulled all my stitches off the needles and had to buy a new mattress, topper and sheets because iv'e thrown my coffee around.

And yet every night I'll do it again. unfortunately I'll do the same when i'm awake,my right arm does have a world of it's own, At first it was funny.

Sometimes I can go off within seconds and think with fibro/cfs my body just needs it, my husband can sit with a cuppa and nod off literally and I have too take the cup off him and his hand stays in the same position (it does look funny @not health conditions ,he says his age 🤣66) I do have a bad habit of taking my hot drinks into my bedroom as I am in a bungalow next too kitchen and the times I’m clumsy and the drink end up on the wall😂my pink carpet is due for a carpet clean in one particular spot😩xx

Yes, I'm exactly the same as you. Sitting in my chair wide awake and then suddenly I'm gone within seconds. I'm also well known for doing the cup of tea in lap trick when I doze off. At the age of 69 it's always a worry waking up to a warm wet feeling gathering in that region lol.

Yes definatly same here in fact I have just woke up . I can be playing games on my phone laid on sofa next minute my phone smacks me in my face. Sometimes when I'm out I get this really heavy feeling like I could sit down and fall asleep at the click of a finger . My son in law calls it my nana Nap 🤣

glochessum profile image

same here, usually while I’ve got a glass of red wine, you should see my carpet😬. Always having to rewind the tv or back track my audio books. I have no problem falling asleep at night but always awake after about 3 hours and that’s it. I sometimes wonder how we survive on so little sleep.

All the time!!! I haven’t been doing this for a couple of years and just recently started doing it again🤔I dozed off at 5pm on Tuesday on the sofa and woke up thinking it must be about 10pm but it was 2am! And again the past few days have done the same😮‍💨I do have sleep apnea and it is after work but I feel as if I’m sleeping my life away ☹️I’m just so extremely exhausted though that as you say I don’t feel myself drifting off so nothing I can do to stop it, I’ve just thought as writing this I should put more alarms on my mobile. Trouble is I have 6 alarms on to wake me up for work in the morning and I only just about hear the last one go off so 🤷‍♀️xx
