Good morning, a few years ago I found that I was taking the maximum dose of Co-codamol 30/500 every day, but they didn't seem to be easing the pain at all. So I decided to stop taking them, I did it by gradually lowering the dose. I stopped 1 tablet a day for a week, and then another tablet for another week and very gradually stopped taking them. I now take them only if the pain is really very bad, and I find that 1 or maybe 2 doses is enough to ease the pain. The key to stopping them is to wean yourself off them. Hope this helps.

Thank you for putting that information into the discussion wean yourself off slowly cut down your dosage over weeks or months to avoid the side effects of withdrawal symptoms. What you posted saved me the effort.

Hi there, if you are suffering badly with withdrawal symptoms. I would strongly advise you call your surgery. Or speak to your pharmacist today. No long term medication should be stopped even paracetamol. Without medical advice or monitoring. It can cause problems. Please speak to a medical professional.

Hi Wilson 1427

I’ve said before in previous posts on the subject of coming off meds but it bears repeating.

Doctors generally advise tapering off then stopping after a couple of weeks. My experience has been the longer you’ve been on a medication the longer it takes to come off it if you want to minimise the withdrawal symptoms, some of which can be very unpleasant.

Unless there is some urgent reason for you to stop or withdraw quickly you might want to slowly reduce the to a lower amount, so if you are taking 50 mg your doctor can prescribe, say 30 mg and so on, until you’re on the lowest amount. Then I would reduce the number of times a day you take it and eventually try every other day then less often until you stop completely.

That way your body and mind can adapt gradually.

Good luck.
