Evening all, after suffering from a sore throat and blocked nose I developed an ear infection, the walk-in centre GP prescribed me Amoxicillin and I requested codeine from my own GP due to the pain I was suffering. After visiting my own GP after a few days with still the same pain he further prescribed me co-amoxiclav.
It has now been a week and while the fluid has stopped coming from my ear I still cannot hear as I used to and I am still in pain... I am getting really worried that my hearing will never return to what it used to be. My GP isn't worried that its anything serious and has said there is most likely still fluid that is still stuck and ruptured eardrums.
Can anyone please give me some hope?
Thank you

In my experience ear infections that are gunky can drag on so it’s not a case of antibiotics and bing, it’s all better. If your eardrums have ruptured it’ll take some weeks to heal. Also, if the muck inside is thick and not freely flowing it can hang around causing hearing issues and the pain may be just the fluid and no longer the infection. If your eardrums are ruptured you need to have the damage assessed to see how it has torn as it can influence how it heals. Here is some advice on ruptured eardrums in case you haven’t been given any
Hi Snazzy, thank you so much for your reply. I was doing some research yesterday and it said if the fluid remains this can lead to further infections and permanent hearing loss which is the real reason for my post.
Thanks for the link, I am due to see my GP on Monday morning for a follow up and will take it from there, on top of my other issues this is something I really did not want
Good you are seeing your GP on Monday as a few more days have passed and he can see if your ear is going in the right direction , I do hope so and in a few days your pain will subside, take care.
I am hoping for you good progress as sore throats, colds etc can lead to ear problems, which are very painful at the time, something happened to me about 11 years ago, I woke up and could hear anything in my right ear, so strange as now under lying effects from colds, throat etc, I was quite scared at the time and I was seen by ENT specialist, it was a mystery no answers, this went on for about 3 weeks , then one morning it came back. Try not too worry too much ,soon be Monday for the doc s and he does not seemed too worried, but we all do worry when it’s ourselves so that’s normal , keep us posted and try and chill over the weekend when you can x
This did come from a cold and a fever, weirdly enough I never experienced a sore throat like this before... Hopefully, this is what happens to me I did rest but I couldn't do much because of the pain. on the bright side, I have stopped taking codeine as it was getting too addictive. Yes Monday is soon will see what the Dr says xx
Hey I am good thanks, my hearing has slowly returned. I have a perforated eardrum in one ear. Very slow process but slowly getting there... Hope you are well
Glad you are slowly going forward that’s good news 😀much better since Tuesday think I caught stomach bug `@ was put on antibiotics for throat so felt very out of sorts , but differently last week days been good. great to see the Sun out too. Makes such a difference🌼🌹🌞
Not too bad, does tend to keep me indoors a lot more when it’s cold, and the heating s back up again . Nice though to pace get threw the household chores and have time out. Today I’m watching Your garden made perfect where 2 designers go up against each other to win their design for the client’s garden. Proberly going to watch England footie friendly tonight as well x
My husband had the same but he actually had blood and puss pumping from his ear. It took some time to heal but his hearing is perfect, well unless I mention him doing a job he doesn't want to do, lol. Hope it starts to improve soon.x
Yes, poor man and he was away on business when it happened. I had a phone call saying "please get me into the doctors for when I come back I am in agony". He was actually relie ed when the eardrum burst as it must have been building up for days.
Sorry didn't reply we are on a few days break and the free wifi is atrocious so gave up. It was about 6 weeks before his ear fully healed and his hearing is perfect. Lol, it is me who has to wear the hearing aids. Hope the doctors visit went well.x
Hey not to worry hope you had a good time away! yes all good, I have a perforated ear drum in the left ear however my hearing has slowly started to return. thank you
Hi, I've had my ear drum burst several times before, I know the pain is excruciating and all the harder because it's not visible. Try not to worry (easier said than done I know) it will take between 2 to 3 weeks before the pain starts to subside and your hearing comes back, but it will. Take regular pain killers and then after 3 weeks if things aren't improving or you're worried, try to get to your gp and get him/ her to look in your ear to see how your ear drum looks. If it's ok it'll probably just take a bit more time to settle.I hope this helps.
Thank you so much for your reply, I know a perforated eardrum can take a few weeks to heal but this just seems like forever lol! I have stopped taking codeine and I am now just taking ibuprofen before bed, I am due to see my GP tomorrow morning so hopefully, he can give me some reassurance. x
Hi all, after a visit to my GP this morning I have returned back and have been told I have a perforated ear drum in the left and fluid in the right... hopefully, this should heal in the next few weeks, he has given me a nasal spray to ease the fluid on the right thank you all for the reassurance
