Leaden, painful legs while walking.

Good morning everyone.

Up until quite recently, I have been able to walk a fair distance with only the usual discomfort of tiredness and aching/burning feet.

In the last 3-4 months when I’ve been on a walk (I love walking) I’ve barely been able to make it back to the car.

My legs, hips, thighs and calves have felt as though they are weighted with lead and very, very painful. Frequent rests help but only for a short while. All this has taken the joy out of something I love.

But it seems to have come on fairly suddenly. Is this normal, this sudden worsening?

How do other people cope with walking?

Thanks for reading. 👍🏼

The leg issue is one of my main fibro challenges. They feel like someone has poured concrete into them some days.

For me, the only thing that works is to use a foam roller for about 10 mins a day. Have you tried one of these?

If it gets really really bad, I go to my physio and she releases everything. If she thinks it’s going to be too painful, she does acupuncture instead.

Thank you, LoneEra. I will have to try one of the rollers. Anything to be able to walk a decent distance again without feeling like a nuisance. 👍🏼

A tennis ball is also pretty effective. Lie on a hard floor and basically move the ball about under each calf and thigh. It hurts (like a massage) but it’s great after 😂

Hi Battler. Know what you mean - I feel cross that something I enjoyed and was good for me (ie walking) has become so difficult because of the pain in my knees.

I can’t remember who or where - but somebody on this forum recommended Fisiocrem (contains arnica, hypericum, calendula, melaleuca). So more herbal than medication. I bought a tube off Amazon and it has really helped. Not taken the pain away - but definitely dampened it down. Enough to keep me mobile anyway.

Hope that information might help you.

Best wishes xxx

Hi Battler, I've used a vibration plate for years, find it really good for my leg muscles especially. I walk a lot in my job, still difficult & feels like walking through sludge but I'm sure it helps. Also find magnesium spray & Epsom salt baths are comforting. Support stockings are good if you can tolerate them, absolutely hideous but you can hide them & keep your fingers crossed you don't end up in A&E ☺️

I also used to walk a good distance but now only walking round a supermarket the pain gets so bad. From my waist to my feet I'm in intense pain and struggle like you to get back to my car. I only walk a short distance now. Nothing stops me hurting but rest and a warm bath help me cope till it eases.

I really struggle with walking too sometimes it is my fibro but most of the time it's my other ailments sciatica and 3 trapped nerves in my lower back but yes my fibro used to be the main cause of it

I had it this bad for quite a few months, and walking is still a challenge (whilst I can usually still cycle fast, LOL), so I usually take my bike (with me) if my wife needs a walk to be brisk or longer.

Similar to LoneEra my acupressurist activated some TCM-points on my legs called "when you want to walk to the next village, but can't manage it" and that hasn't been necessary again. Apart from her kneading the muscles she also regularly used a pneumatron gadget on thighs, knees and calves. Also putting my feet up (high) before and during (on a bench).

As a cream I also use an arnica complex cream.

Feel for you. I get this. Burning, heaviness in my lower legs and pins and needles when I put my legs together. Mine was so bad recently, after a flair up that i could not even walk 3,000 steps with out having a sleep.

I have tried a bit of yoga, stretching helps, i had to push myself even though I didn't want to, every day, start with 3,000. I put cream on my legs before walk. Cbd recovery, injury time, had a bath before walk. I have a massage gun, so do that before and after, i also am now up to 6,000 steps, sometimes even 10,000 steps and i am also trialling b12 injections and definitely seeing an improvement in my energy levels. I am also having acupuncture.

Hope you are okay and it goes. I know how awful that feeling is. I will do anything to get rid of it.

Since taking vitamin d tablets, i have started to get less of the spasms in my legs, i also do meditation. i would urge anyone to get a blood test for vitamin check.

Get better soon. Xxx
