Watch a programme on BBC Iplayer with Michael Mosley looking into U.K. opioid problem . Wow !!!!!

I take 10mg oxycodene hydrochloride and on his programme 5mg of the drug is equivalent to taking 75 yes 75 co codomol !!!!!!!!!!!

Please do have a look it’s shocking .

Hi

I’ve just been put on the same amount of gabapentin for neurological pain (mostly) and so far so good, no extreme side effects guess time will tell.. I’m also taking co-codamol too

I have exact the same I also have deluxitine dyhyracodine liquid morphine diazepam a good old mix and I still have pain I was on the pain management course and they told us no matter what meds you take it will never take away all the pain it only actually touches 40% of the pain I just think how bad I will be if I had not pain meds

Gabapentin isn’t an Opioid and also OIH is one reason someone may choose to stop taking Opioids for long term chronic pain. I believe it affects around 20% - 40% worldwide.

However, I would say that sometimes Opioids used as prescribed can be helpful for pain relief, as Tramadol is recommended for Fibro pain by EULAR whereas anything stronger is considered to have more risks than benefits.

Risks to health & possibility of addiction are the most important reason to either reduce Opioids or to not take stronger ones. Remember dependence is not addiction, yes it can lead to addiction but you can be dependent on meds due to long term use for pain used as prescribed.

Hope this helps

Emma :)

3 tabs a day isn’t enough really tbh and I’m on the sister med so pregabalin and yes it’s used as a pain killer too. My spinal specialist put me on a higher dose of it when I wasn’t sleeping due to pain. I’m on Dyhidracodeine (sorry can never spell it) for my main spinal pain, baclafen which is similar to diazepam but not addictive apparently, 300mg pregabalin twice a day for pain and nerve issues and another one called methocarbamol again for nerve pain. Sometimes it’s a lot of trial and error with meds and what works for one might not for another.

Hi,

I take both cocodamol and gabapentin 900mg per day. Although neither of them completely take away the pain, the gabapentin helps with the nerve pain and the cocodamol with other pain but I still have to cope with chronic lower back pain as nothing seems to touch that as well.

I only take the cocodamol when I'm going out as I walk most places or take the bus, it depends what I am doing and how important it is not to be in pain for too long, if that makes sense.

Have you tried Pregabalin instead of Gabapentin ? I found that it was more helpful for pain. I know tht what work for one person may not for another, but it’s might be worth trying (if GP will prescribe as they are reducing high risk & Opioid meds due to Gov UK directive)

Hi Mdaisy,

I think there was a reason why the GP wouldn't prescribe pregablin. I have other issues so the GP went with the gabapentin.

Hi I take Codeine-Phosphate with Paracetamol and also Pregabalin; although I try and limit the Pregabalin and it can cause side effects, like any drug. I also have Tramadol, when nothing else helps. I agree that we are all different and what works for one person may not be ideal for someone else. I was put on Gabapentin when I was first diagnosed over 20 years ago and started off on a small dose and then the dosage was increased. I found that I could not tolerate the higher doses; as it made me dizzy. I hope you find some pain relief that works for you.

I have been prescribed the same as you. It does seem to moderately help the pain left over from shingles. On the plus side it does help me sleep at night. Negative is that I have blurred vision.
