Just picked up on posts of people discussing benefits. I have had fibro for over 30 years and endometriosis before that. Applied for disability benefit when I first finished full time work 26 years ago, (aged 53) but because i only paid small stamp and was assessed as being fully fit ( which I wasn't) i have never had a penny from the state, either disability or unemployment benefit, we have had to manage on our earnings and savings. My husband finished work 5 years ago aged 76. He is now almost 81, so we do now get old aged pension. He was diagnosed early dementia 12 months ago, and has mobility problems after a knee replacement 5 years ago was not successful, so refuses to have other knee done, and broke his foot last Xmas that also affects his walking. My condition has deteriorated. I am finding it difficult to cope, and in tears most days. Surely we should be entitled to something. and not penalised because we have savings. Some much younger people than us seem to get financial help, some of whom have never worked or contributed to the system at all, which because of my health is causing me quite a lot of anger, and adding to my stress and resentment I have never been offered advice or helped by anyone, and my brain fog and head pain makes it difficult to source things out. Hopefully someone here can offer some guidance. x

You should phone your local council and ask if they have a benefits adviser, if they do make an appointment, and while you will be unable to claim PIP, you may be able to claim Attendance Allowance. PIP is only available to those who have not reached retirement age, at application and, if they reach retirement age while still receiving the benefit, then PIP will be paid instead of Attendance Allowance. If your council don't have a benefits adviser, then contact your local CAB, and they should be able to advise you.

PIP is for people of working age. You should apply for Attendance Allowance which is for people over State Pension age who have disabilities.
