Pain clinics vary from one area to another, but I wouldn't describe them necessarily as end of the line - your consultant may think that they will be able to offer you more than he can. Often pain clinics have educational pain management programmes which can help you learn techniques for living with chronic pain. Xxx

In my area being referred to the pain consultant is seen as the final option for treatment. Both my wife and I went through most of the treatment options with both our GP and rheumatologist none of which really helped to any great degree. On the bright side we both found our local pain management programme helped. It is definitely not a cure but we both now have a greater range of options when it comes to flairs. Basically we now have various techniques to help the pain and more medication options which we can both use when the pain gets bad. During the programme a flair plan was developed and the tools put in place to self manage our conditions. I personally think my local programme is one of the best in the UK as from reading others experiences the quality of programmes can vary from area to area.

I found the Pain Clinic rather than end of the line they were a breath of fresh air. To be listened to, believed and treated as I was the only patient they ever had was amazing. Saw them on the Monday, x-rays Tuesday MRI Wednesday, then within two weeks trigger point injections etc. The consultant when I saw her for the injections apologised for the way I had been treated in the past and apologised again that she was a week behind sending her letters to GP due to work load but would get them out within the next couple of days. Can't wait for the follow up appointment. You may be pleasantly surprised :)

Many thanks for your reassuring response
