Hi the last few days the outside of my left hip down to the knee felt like a huge bruise. Even just touching that area hurt. No visible drama on my skin - why?

Where can I go for help

Regards Liz

Hi, I often get this type of pain where an area feels like it has been bruised /injured but they're are no visible signs of a bruise

It's a form of nerve pain. I'm already on medication for nerve pain, so when this type of pain flares I just need to let it ease off in its own time (in my case, it only usually lasts a few days in one place)

Hi there, I think many people feel this kind of pain. I have it regularly. Like Hazel said it can be due to nerve pain. Sitting in the wrong position for too long etc. Mine also go's away after a day or too. But if your overly concerned about it. Maybe you should mention it to your GP.

Hi thanks for letting me know about my post being unlocked. As you say it does go away after a few days and then goes to another part of the body. It’s easier to laugh than cry! xx

Just to add that fibro is all about pain without an obvious cause and even without a precipitating action like a bump. However, innocuous bumps can cause pain as well.

Thanks xx

Hi Hope444,

I don't know if this will do you any good, but it helps me. I sit in the bathtub, turn on the water, and situate myself so the water from the faucet pounds right on the painful area. Sort of a hot wet message. Sometimes I set it so the water comes out really fast and just let it run until the hot runs out. It seems to help, for a little while at least.

I have exact same symptom now and have had it on and off for years. Mine originates somewhere near that nobly bit at top of bottom, radiates though the piriformis area and I could draw a line down outside of thigh and where it passes through my knee. Leg becomes weak and I have to lift it. I believe it is a nerve and this was confirmed bu physio but sadly her suggested exercises make it worse.Heat pads from a chemist stuck on the origin of it help me. I also have injections but due to Covid will be waiting months for those.

Hi Hope,Definitely sounds like nerve pain of some sort. I and many with Fibromyalgia have Allodynia (maybe something you want to Google if you don’t already know about it) which causes pain by light contact that shouldn’t usually cause pain. This could be a potential reason for your pain, so wearing loose baggy trousers to reduce skin contact could be really beneficial. I’ve heard warm baths can help some people, although this doesn’t seem to work for me, but is always worth a try.

If I get this (or for any bruise actually) I use arnica cream and give it a gentle massage. It seems to make the pain go more quickly than when I've not used it or have run out. I get mine from either the chemist in a cream or from an aromatherapy supplier as a base oil (I'm a qualified practitioner)

Hi Hope,I often have that kind of pain in most parts of my body. The hip/lower back/and upper legs tend to be almost constant, with my left side worse than the right. It is often difficult to sleep well. There are days/weeks where it is almost gone. My arms hurt to the touch too. I think this is just another way fibro behaves. I sometimes find an epson salt bath helps. Also, seeing a chiropractor or other therapist who practices “dry needling” (similar to acupuncture, but needles are shorter, go in the muscles, and in for seconds) can be a great help. I’ve been seeing one for the past several months (now on maintenance once every 4-6 weeks. It’s made a big difference in my pain level and flare duration.
