Coming off Duloxetine

I just wanted to share a little of my story (ill try and keep it short) Ive had Fibro and other AI conditions for the best part of 15 or so years, ive been on and off Duloxetine and other Neuroinhibitors and painkiller for all that time. I would say I have been in a full-time flare (bare a couple or so weeks during the summer months) for about 3/4 years, anyway one of the worse side effects was chronic and severe constipation. Not a lot would help if I didnt keep track of things and keep up with figs and orange juice. So the big thing is I came off Duloxetine and within a couple of weeks my body started working properly again. I cannot tell you, my pain meds are at an absolute minimum and I actually feel like im getting a little bit of my life back, my energy levels are slowly improving and my brain, wow the fog is so different!. If you've ever thought of coming off , here is my so far positive experience !! yay !

its slow and hard to really appreciate that a little thing is actually a lot in the scheme of how bad I have been.

in reply to sleepytink

That is so true. It is very hard. I'm not feeling too good as I have many conditions. I really hope you carry on improving.

Do you manage to sleep well. I get 1 hour or less per night cos of pain. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

my rheumatologist couldn't believe I had been on duloxetine for so many years , he says it the most toxic drug! I used to be in the worst sleeping routine of approx 3-4am with maybe a couple of hours at a time , now I actually go to bed between 11 and 1 and sleep 3 -5 hours at a time, it really makes a huge difference I know

in reply to sleepytink

I would love a few hours of sleep but I'm pleased you are getting some sleep. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

That’s so interesting! So pleased to hear it’s made a positive difference for you! Some of my drugs make me so constipated and that has a knock on effect on pain levels, and other things too. It makes sense that if you can eliminate effectively then you’d feel clearer in the head. X

I really think Its more than just clearer headed Maya, if you can get your body to metabolise and get everything to move through it, it seems fairly simple that if nothing moves through you it makes it harder for us to actually move. I cant believe that after years of issues and I mean serious screaming and tears stuff that I now go easily virtually every morning yay hay!!!

Absolutely! I feel so much better if I’m regular. I’ve found that adding in loads more fruit and veg in my diet and eating less meat has made a difference to my digestion recently. I’m making juices too. :)

I have just discovered the joys of Castor oil. TINY amount in warm drink at bedtime (1/2 teaspoon). Then, massage tum with it, concentrating on belly button.

Am researching Amino Acids for my CFS and Fibro. So far L-Tyrosine and Acetyl L-Carnitine helping best.

Since May, I have ended MANY years usage of Pregablin, Codeine, Tramadol, MaxiTram, High Dose Ibuprofen (only anti-inflammatory I can take for CPS)

I only found out I had Fibromyalgia when I asked one of the physiotherapists on an in-patient pain management programme what my GP had written in my referral letter!..... Sorry, this wasn't supposed to be about me. I really just wanted to hear how you are these days.

When my GP recommended Duloxetine in May, I told him that I wouldn't try another med unless I could stop at least one I'd been on for a l-o-n-g time. None of them worked for my bouts of totally uncontrollable pain. He agreed, but then the side effects of starting on Duloxetine became a double whammy with those of coming off Pregablin.

Having said that, I have actually found Duloxetine more beneficial than its early days promised.I

As well as the Pregablin, I have also come off Codeine, Tramadol, Maxitram and Hi Rose Ibuprofen (the only anti-inflammatory that doesn't make me fall over).

I joined this forum today because I'd underestimated the horrific withdrawal symptoms of Duloxetine! There I was thinking it'd be easier to come off 60mg Duloxetine after 6 months than ending my 10-year dependence on a daily 240mg Codeine. How wrong can a person be?!?!

At what point do the benefits of taking a med like Duloxetine outweigh the downsides?

Did you have withdrawal symptoms during that time? I’m self employed and was told I’d get these symptoms... so I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place as if I don’t work I don’t earn and I’m guessing I’d not be feeling like working for at least a week anyway? Any advice? Thanks

sleepytink in reply to BostonBella

no I think I am very very lucky I forgot to take them for a few days on and off as I had major stuff going on and then two big issues where sorted and I was going on holiday so I thought I think ill just keep going without them and see what happens! I would say that the only side effect was and possibly still is that im a little more short fused and cranky, a bit like pms I guess maybe cranked up a little bit. My family haven't mentioned it, so it could actually be my own self awareness returning without the antidepressants dulling everything out. Good luck if you try

Oh I’m a bit pms crazy without that, not sure how well I would do lol..... I am now only on the lowest dose so hopefully I’ll get there soon. Fingers crossed it will have the same affect that you got x thanks

good luck and keep on persevering , I always found starflower oil a massive help with the pms, also has been a great bonus too as no periods so one less thing to strain the body !! wish I did it earlier

Glad to hear you are finding a way round your pain, I stopped duloxetine almost immediately I started taken it, aggravate my stomach acid symptoms, coping well with notriptyline now, t least getting 4_5hours sleep.

I've been on duloxetine for a few years (120mg) but due to the pain it helped with which has now returned I decided to quit, on 30mg a day at mo as I was coming off too quick and getting nasty, another month I'll be clean of it I hope. Lots of bad things said about cymbalta/duloxetine, anyway it did me good for a while. Same as lyrica/pregabalin that did wonders for my fibro pain but I quit that as pain has returned.

I have zero energy though, still can't get out of bed more than once a week.

As long as I have my homemade pint smoothie everyday, no problems in the tiny office or if you forget, handful of those southern Californian dried prunes last thing will keep you mobile.

sleepytink in reply to arnieatmo

hope you find it better too when you are finally off them but yes I too found pain returned with both after a while, but seriously shocked at how comparatively pain free I am having come off, good luck to you

arnieatmo profile image
arnieatmo in reply to sleepytink

yes I'm surprised that I'm not suffering more but then I do take a tramadol or temsgesic once a day mainly so I can get things done, and that really does help with the pain (if your body feels like letting it work on any given day that is) for most of the day. I don't like evenings though. Keep it up!

healthunlocked.com/fibromya..., hello I always read of interest here peoples experiences, I’ve been on duloxtene one tablet 60mg for nearly 2 years, I know it helps with pain but was initially put on for bad anxiety, it has worked 100 percent for that, weight gain un fortunately and headaches in mornings which I assumed was my sleep machine but reading the instructions in the pack does say heads, I would love to consider coming off really because of the weight gain but quite worried that anxiety would trigger off and I would be back to square one. Glad you are improving always good to read postive news, I’ve posted a link above if you would like to lock your posts that way only our community can see take care xx
