Hi everyone hope you are all as well as can be. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my hands wrists shoulders hips and kness and also fibromyalgia about 18 months ago. I filled in a form for ESA back in August and I haven't heard anything? I was wondering how long it takes and if you get accepted for ESA if they back date the payments to when you first applied?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks

Yes payments are backdated, but you'll probably be dragged in for a medical before they make a decision.
Ask for a home appointment, they may well refuse but its worth a try.
ESA assessments work on a points system. You will lose points for dressing well , being early, taking a child with you wearing make up etc (I know ridiculous) They will also take you to an assessment room that is miles away!! To see how you move!!! So the assessment starts as soon as you reach the car park. Ask for your medical to be audio recorded beforehand. There will be a number on the appointment letter. They will not write down everything you tell them. So a recording is an indisputable transcript. Dont be surprised if they say you have failed to gain enough points to qualify for ESA. This is a common tactic and at least 50% of these decisions are overturned on appeal. But whatever you do don't tell them you have good days lol. Explain all aspects of how your conditions affect you physically and mentally. Tàke in a list and read from it. Get as many supporting letters from any specialists GP physio etc to support you. Dont give up if you dont pass first time. Appeal. If you are placed in the work related ESA group, appeal that too on special and exceptional circumstances that state to force you to look for work will worsen your illnesses. Get a place in the support group if you are very unwell. I've had many of these journeys and you have a great shot if you are organised and prepared.Good luck!!!
