There's a lot of evidence that singing and music can boost natural hormones... I used to attend a drumming group for people with mental health problems, and I always came away feeling much better mentally and physically xxxx

bobbybobb profile image
bobbybobb in reply toHazel_Angelstar

yes there is a lot of support and it's beneficial for depression and mental health. I don't think I've seen much evidence to say it helps people to withdraw from medications they have been on long term or that it's an answer to chronic and acute pain. x

Hazel_Angelstar profile image
Hazel_AngelstarAdministratorFMA UK Staff in reply tobobbybobb

It's maybe not the complete answer, but I do believe that it can help you to manage and cope with a chronic health condition.

Gjkas profile image
Gjkas in reply toHazel_Angelstar

Oh Hazel, it certainly isn't the complete answer.

I know it can help if you are feeling down, it does lift your spirits.

But theres no way on Earth it will help if you are in Chronic Pain.

And if anyone in CHRONIC PAIN say that singing helps them with the Pain, especially the Fibromyalgia Pain.

THEN THEY JUST CAN'T HAVE

FIBROMYALGIA.

When I get the pain so very bad,

I don't even feel like talking

Let alone singing.

When the T.V is on my Husband has to turn the volume down.

🔊🔊🔉because it's like someone shouting in my Ears.

All i want is peace and quiet.

Wouldn't it be great if singing did help get rid of the pain.

We wouldn't have to keep waiting to see a Doctor, or going to the Hospital ,or crying so much.

Because that's what I'm doing now. Ive tried singing, but it doesn't work, not for me anyway.

I hope that they find a cure for this dreadful Disease very soon.

We can hope. 🤞 fingers crossed.

But until then

You take care Gjkas.

We may have to disagree on this one.... As while it may not take away your pain - it definitely can help by taking your mind off it, even for a short time. I'm not saying singing will work for everyone but I know that it can help me

Distraction is a proven self /pain management technique (and singing is only one suggestion - it can be anything watching TV/a movie etc, reading a book, doing crafts etc - anything which focuses your attention on something else and takes your mind off your symptoms.

I have lived with severe chronic pain from fibromyalgia for 25 years, so my pain is definitely real... And yes, sometimes it is so severe that distraction techniques don't help - but for me personally I can usually manage to find something that helps distract my brain for a short while, so it forgets to send a pain signal or two xxx

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one Hazel. As well as having Chronic Fibromyalgia ,Rheumatoid Arthritis , Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis. I also have 2 Heart Valve's that aren't working, Angina, C.O.P.D and Asthma.

Also have 16 cm mixed Haitus Hernia, Umbilical Hernia, Uterine Prolapse. Have quite a job to breathe let alone sing

Recently while i was in Hospital they found out that I have an .

Enlarged Liver, Blocked Bile Duct , Cyst on the Pancreas and Gallstones. I have an appointment at EBBW VALE HOSPITAL next week to see what the outcome is.

NO. NO. NO.

Singing wouldn't help me,

Iv got a job to breathe.

But I do understand what you mean, because before I had all this i used to have the radio on all the time and sing along with them.

I loved singing and dancing.

Memories Sweet Memories.

You Take Care Hazel and keep

singing while you can .Godbless Glojo x

Oh Hazel, honestly I don't know what to do with myself. I know that a lot of people out there are in a lot of pain. Trouble is, there's so much gone wrong with me, the Doctor's don't know what to do to help me anymore.

You are right about the singing normally helping people.

If you could have seen me years ago I was a real nutcase my Friends used to call me. Wherever there was a Dance Floor, I'd be there.

The MEMO in New bridge

The Majestic, St MICHAEL'S HOP,

EBBW BRIDGE CLUB. I wasn't just dancing there, id be singing with the rest of them.

Oh I could go on and on, but I had better finish for now, before i get carried away.

Goodnight Godbless Hazel.

Thank you. Excellent idea

A think that Dr needs to take some of his own advice and start singing, because he must be on drugs to think thats going to work haha.yeah maybe for a select few with the right mindset.I worked in mental health and believe me nooooooooooo.music always lifts my mood like.unless its one of them times when even music is gets on my nerves.like to much light or to much heat.hmmmmmmmm at the end of the day am sure most people on medication who really need it.actually dont want to take it.i know i dont.get sick of the sight of tablets ad rather lie in pain alot of the time instead of being to spaced out on pain killers that cant be doing our liver and body any good!

HulkM,

I can realte to the music being uplifting ,, auctualy I became an ardent audiophile shortly after I got my first job. i lived for music and getting closer and closer to palpable sound. Over the years I kept changing things and ended up with some very specialist audio equipment most of it hand built. Also a huge music libary.

From getting fibro I rarely put it on now and when I do it's short lived,, I find I am unable to cope with it now and silence is the order of the house.

Last week a freind took me to a cottage he had rented up the coast for a few days,, I thought my head was going to go,, the TV was on his phone was ringing, he was talking on the phone and it was all echoing in my brain,, it really was a sensory overload.

The cottage was lovely but I just couldn't wait to get back to silence!

in reply toRayB

Horrible isnt it.massive part of our lives also stripped away.MUSIC for gods sake music is my life/ was / is still when a can deal with it.my mate put his tunes on in the car n nearly blew my head off the other day was weird v uncomfortable.a got myself a few valium the other day and for the first time in a while (since a last had a few valium probably) a felt sweet for 3 days basically a went on a bender (Session) 3 days vallium alcohol and some weed.

And felt great nothing was as bad fibro wise.

A dont drink anymore due to the fact it makes me suffer more but this man had had enough.so on the Session i went.and it felt great sad state of affairs because a dont want to behave like this at my age but needs must.Drs cant seem to help so self medicating from time to time a think is the way forward for me again, some will agree some will disagree each to there own.

Suffered for a couple of days after it.worth it tho for me.👍

Pure relaxed state of mind and body for 3 days.who wouldnt want that it used to be a normal everyday feeling for me without using any of the above.

Ahhhhhhhhhh felt human again.a got some decent ear plugs that are really comfortable and the ears can still slightly hear they help when my senses are heightened they just take background noise away the ANNOYING noise haha.hope your keeping ok RayB.

Grand hulk,

I don't drink either,, with me I try with everything I do to give my body the easiest time,, right down to what I eat and when I eat it and the amount I eat. Probably sounds nuts to most as people take everything like this for granted but it's all just more demand on your system.

Sometimes I feel like giveing in going and getting the pain killers and antidepressants but I hate the thought of putting that toxic crap into my body,, not that they ever realy helped,, other than Lyrica for a while then they had to keep upping the dose and I was getting less and less benifit so called it a day with that one.

Had a certain amount of sucess with Amitriptiline as well but only with the shooting pains.

Been looking an awful lot at cannabis this last few days and it's very intresting when you auctualy get someone talking about it from a position of knowledge and rational.

One hears so much scaremongering from the REPEATERS.

I would love to try LDN but was dismissed by the quack. I am just so fed up with the whole thing.

Look at that,, Rain Rain and more Rain,,, Rain and Pain!

in reply toRayB

Good good.yeah am prone to trying alsorts of health remedies myself o natural over prescription medications problem is after years of cutting foods out adding foods taking this and that nothing seems to work.a find amino acids sometimes help full complex and protein but then again not all the time so am not sure of there effectiveness vegan protein for me last few years it agrees with me better.tastes like cardboard tho haha the amino acids and protein all good for the muscles tendons etc. A take cod liver oil with vitamin D, cider vinegar and get plenty vitamin C fom oranges and a like a minimum of 1 banana a day.thats what i have resorted to after years of messing about with things that didnt work.an try an eat plenty veg broccoli especially.

And prescription wise atm its cocodamol for pain but there useless a last resort. So its pain everday my doctors is a joke hence why i have taken things into my own hands. Exercise when a can to keep ma body from stiffening up.and some times hot water bottle for the back.to be honest a have never found any type of cannabis that has helped my pain, but it does help my sleep.and if its a really bad pain day and a know a wont be doing a thing.it can help alleviate the bordom.

Cbd oil has no affects on my pain a know for some they love it and it works for sleep ,anxiety ,pain, stress.

So theres my lal list of what i take atm. Oh and pleanty water least 4 pints a day maybe one or two of them with diluted high juice depending on how am feeling haha.

I would rather have pain and a clear head than take pain killers that help a little bit,but not enough to make it worth while taking them frequently

A think we try our hardest to solve the mystery of fibro an everyone is different and how we tolerate certain things is also different so its each to there own.we are all unique haha👍

Hulk, I think your right about taking things into your own hands,, to me it has always seemed like a fools game with the Dr and I am not one of those good paitents that hangs on the every word of the Dr thinking everything they care say is gosple,, even if they themselves are convinced of there invincibility.

I think the problem the most of the canabis available in the uk is produced for one reason "quantity" at least in the USA with the dispensries you can get one grown specificly for pain where the THC is not so high,,, I think it's wrong to remove it all together. The CBD changes how the THC effects you and you don't get the high feeling.,, the two together work hand in hand. But I suspect that in time to come it will be discovered that many of the other compouds in the plant are as valuble as anything else,, Terpenes are a likely one.

Anyway herbalists have always cautioned whole herbs as they were designed by the creator and not chemicaly altering them or you were them left with substances that were more chemicals and chemistry and no longer natural substances.

I have always been convinced that I would one day I would no longer have Fibro and while I sort of accept I will probably have it for the rest of my life I still live in hope.

in reply toRayB

Well said RayB.i do love a good debate interesting to see isnt it how we all differ with opinions on meds and trying to sort our self out.😅.a think for some its just easier to go along with a doctor especially at first.after years of there lack of knowledge and help i was driven to try and help myself no option.for some the doctors seem to get it right.I feel because i dont look ill and frail that they dont take me as serious little do they know the pain n misery i go through to try and keep looking well.it is getting harder as every year goes by now though.

Suppose it is what it is for a lot of us.

Hope all have a good weekend.Hulk out✌

Yeah,

In the same Ray, ive had Valvular Heart Disease for a long time, but it's never stopped me from singing and dancing. Wherever there was a dance floor you'd find me.

I just loved Jiving, The Twist,The Charleston and a waltz. My Husband has 2 left feet, HAHAHA.

He couldn't dance for Toffee.

But he knew how much I loved it so he didn't mind me being on the dance floor most of the night .

( He would get up to have a waltz. ) When we were at home I'd have the Radio on and sing along with all the songs, ESPECIALLY ELVIS PRESLEY.

MY IDOL OHHHHHH

I WENT TO MEMPHIS TENNESSEE with a friend when I was 62 year's old Then the Fibromyalgia struck, i was in Hospital for 6 weeks before they diagnosed it.

Since then my life has been absolute SHITE. Cant stand listening to the music . My Husband has to keep turning the TV volume down .

Having the lights on hurt my eyes .

When I get cold i am in Agony.

When I get too warm I am un Agony .

We booked a little cottage in South Molton in Devon , my Mum was born in Tiverton and I really wanted to go there just 1 more time.It was my Birthday as well on July 17th ,HUH . We were only there for 3 days and my Husband had to bring me back home

Ive gone from being a Happy Person to being a miserable old Bugger. But I can't help it.I hurt so much all the time. I hate this horrible ,rotten stinking ,painful disease .It takes your life away, and people that doesn't have it, don't understand it because they can't bloody see it ...

Even some of the so called DOCTORS

GRRRRRR, Makes me so angry .

And so, so, Sad

Night Night Ray.

Given that I cannot have the radio too loud, stopped going to the cinema and theatre because I can’t control the sound levels, and even people with loud voices set my nerves jangling, I don’t think being in a choir is going to help.

Agree it might help people with some conditions but I think that’s the company and joint interest in something.

Maybe some of these drs could actually look for the causes/causes of fibro and find out exactly what is going on in our bodies. Then we might get better and more effective treatments.

RayB profile image
RayB

Holly, I think you make a very valid points,, the problem to me is much deeper than finding out exectly what is going on in our bodies. A good example is this noise thing,, sorry music.

You go to the Dr and say the TV irritates you,, or people talking is all very confusing and leaves you on edge!

The fact that statistical evidance shows many of us suffer in this way holds no relivance.

NO!

It's because your depressed,, you need more antidepressants!

Irrespective of the repeated evidance and experiance of people suffering with the condition.

When the often wild thoughts of a Dr has more relivance or weight than what the paitents are repeated saying there is something drasticaly wrong.

You don't want more antidepressants,, Well you don't want to help yourself,,, while on your notes Medication Refused and still their view has weight and the paitent who has been though the mill with the antidepressants in the past is somehow wrong, misguided or foolish and you go out feeling dejected and irrelivant. You buy books and educate yourself on the subject by the Drs that are at least trying to do something and it hypochondria.

It really is a the witch in a basket situation and a very sorry state of affairs and needs to change.

I personaly feel that the whole medical system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up rather that than small adjustments .

RayB profile image
RayB

Zoonie, your right on the money in that most Dr's will not in an sort of ballance way point out the very serious effects that most drugs have,, it's overlooked.

When you compare this with the attitud of how any sort of herbal medcine that has existed and been studied for melenia via observation if nothing else is viewed,,, well the precautionary principle is allways used,,, I wouldn't if i were you,, just incase. When in auctual fact it is not a Dr's area of study yet they have a rather frowning disposition on the matter.

Canibis is one glaring example at present,, one cannot be to careful is the general assumption, and they know nothing little other than what they seem to be told in the in house rags. Or Well there is NO EVIDANCE,,, well that depends where they look and what they want to call evidance!

I ended up watching all 9 episodes of this I won't bore with the details but this Dr speaks well of it,, this link should take you to a very relivent part of the video but in other parts he had mentioned it's paticular benifit and value in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

He also said that in all his years as an Emergency Physican he only ever seen a few people with any sort of problem using it and even then it was one of a bit of panic and not any auctual harm.

Zoomie, it was VETSGROW Episode 7 on utube,,, I tried to reference right to the relivant bit where the Dr was talking but I didn't seem to work. The whole thing was intresting enough and I did manage to see it through to the end,, especialy when I heard them talk of Fibromyalgia.

The Dr was excelent,, very human,, I wish he was my Dr!

It dosen't matter if your can sing as long as you can howl in a musical tone!

OHhhh,,,, Now what are your accusing me of,, I didnt mention IBS.

Zoonie, there is auctualy one charity that is giving it away for free to those that can't aford to buy it and the government are demanding that they pay tax on the value of the medicne that they are giving away.

That's just crazy sort of pcyopathic world that we are being forced into by a lot of very wealthy idiots that have been voted into power.

RayB profile image
RayB

It is my personal belief that we have a situation of big pharma protecting it's profits by greasing the pockets of individuals in government via the open all hours turnstiles in Westminster.

The lobying industry is very well funded and that is not for any reason other than getting what they want at any cost as long as profits are maximised.

I used to be friendly with a drug rep many years ago,,earned a fortune and had a huge buget for what was called "entertaining" she was told that if she did not go well over her buget she would not be the sort of rep who would remain,, and in the next breath was told that she would be repremanded for going over her entertainment budget.

As she left the office the words, I look forward to seeing your at your repremand go spend!

When I worked at the vetinary practice and the reps came in they literaly couldn't throw enough stuff at us.

One of the biggest deliveries that arrived on a monthly basis was the samples of that very expensive dried cat and dog food.

The box was about three foot square.

We used to donate it to two old ladies down the road that took in all the strays of the day to help out with their feeding costs,,, they were two saints, bless them!

Zoonie, sorry to hear about your son,, I would hate to be a teenager today,, somehow their seems to be pressure that was not there when I was growing up,, I was happy with a bit of string tied to the end of a stick dangleing it in puddles.

Everything today in media tells people they are not complete unless they have their product,, more pressure.

I have never smoked the stuff as I don't smoke but my sister inlaw made chocolate brownies when I visited her in USA and I tried one,, she told me they were wornderfull ,, didn't do anything and didn't taste very nice.

I eat a bit of it many years back and I was very relaxed and I remember laughing at nothing but nothing was very funny for some reason that I couldn't explain why but it didn't matter. It was a new experiance at the time but I wouldn't not want to be like that all the time.

Don't know what all the fuss is about I would rather spend time with people who were stoned than people who were drunk anyday of the week,, and the stoners never fight or cause bother,, usualy very placid people.

Government just anoy me so much,, I live in N,Ireland and would love to get one of those E-bikes to get me around,, it would give me so much freedom, but here they have the same status and motorbikes and have to be registered taxed and have motorbike insurance and alos have a big ugly numberplate on the front and you have to ware a crash helmut.

I was reading that the last priminsters husband has very large intrests in a canabis farm it starts to throw light on the situation, profits are much incresed when one has control of the market.

In USA the prices in the dispenserys is crazy,,it has noting to do with anyones health or safety just about profit,, they are no different than street merchants as the whole thing in profit driven while people suffer.

One charity was giving the stuff to terminaly ill people,, no money was changing hands and strangely the terminaly ill people with all sorts of cancers were getting better. Then the American Government started demanding that the charity pay tax on the supposed value of the medicne that was making them better,, well hello where's the sense in that,, where's the humanity and compassion.

I just can't fathom society today it's rediulous and the worst is always politicians and there wanton ways and heavy handed tactics while the people that have elected them into their position suffer at there hands.

They certaintly are not working for the public or answerable to us any more.

I belong to a choir, it is the highlight if my week. For the hour you do not think about anything gelse and enjoy the sound of voices coming together. I have always felt better when I have been. There have been times I have dragged myself but not ince have Not enjoyed it. Our Choir leader runs 'singing for breathing sessions for people with COPD and lung conditions. They held a concert where there were double lung transplant patients singing their hearts out. It was so moving and sounded good.

Give it a try.
