Pain in my jaw
Hi, I can't believe your post... I have been feeling terrible the last few days - well extra terrible lets say!... I thought I'd probably got neuralgia coming but it is far worse, my jaw started aching and I thought I would get some chewing gum to try and give my jaw some gentle exercise even though my Husband seems to think I give it enough exercise with my moaning about my aches and pains! Anyway I haven't even entertained trying the chewing gum as the pain in my jaw is horrific, it is like a cramp come electric shock that causes my jaw to lock up and then leave an after shock effect. Unfortunately I am not able to give you any advice to curing it if this is what you are suffering as I don't have a cure, but who knows.... Maybe somebody else can help?
Not in Manchester I live in Midlands
It sounds like TMJ. I'm sorry I can't remember what the initials actually stand for, but if you Google TMJ, you may find this is what you're suffering from.
I hope it eases for you soon. x
Yes, I've had this too. I didn't know whether it was my fibromyalgia or something to do with the many issues I have. Hope you are all as well as can be. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
Saw my dentist about this. He came up with a few suggestions which helped... Though it was more than a few weeks to ease. Some things I can't remember but trying not to talk was one of them, along with as soft a diet as possible... Basically rest it.
Why not visit your dentist? That's what we pay them for!
I have a lot of pain in jaw it locks up a lot as well I saw my doctor they told me to see a dentist x
My lupus initially started from jaw I was struggling to eat..
Yes, I have TMJ for many years, such jaw pain with restriction, and also difficulty in chewing and swallowing. I find that applying aloe vera gel to the face and jaw does help.
Like me you could ask your dental surgeon to make you a gum shield to stop grinding, many of us do this without knowing,, has your g.p looked into TMJ in your jaw? this is also caused by grinding and clenching teeth. I chew gum, a very soft version from M&S , I find others too harsh.
You have just reiterated what l was going to write...
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder - TMJ
mayoclinic.org/diseases-con...
I think I have it as well.
My teeth are awful despite me brushing them, not sure if that's linked to it or not.
I had the same I was taken by ambulance to hospital as it is sign of a heart attack Please contact your local health centre on 111 ASAP
Hi , sorry about the discomfort your in.
I had the same problem and it also brought on headaches...
my dentist said the pain is due to clenching my teeth together as I have pain spasms.
He suggested a mouth guard to wear to bed at night ( a mould was taken in order to do so)
I must say this has reduced the headaches and my jaw doesn’t hurt like it use to.
Hope this info helps xxx
Hi never had it in my jaw but ive experienced pain in my cheek bones under my eyes and boy does that hurt some days i dont know wether to laugh or cry but you always seem to carry on try warming a hankichief or a small scarf and not it near the pain good luck
It could be temporal mandular dysfunction. (Through teeth grinding) ask your dentist for a mouth guard. Eating soft food may also help.
Hi, I have suffered jaw pain for a number of years. I also have headaches, ear pain and neuralgia down the right side of my face. I had lock jaw for 15 days and could only open my mouth about 1inch. I ended up going to A & E because it was going on for so long. They took X-rays and gave me some anti inflammatory’s to help with the pain and bring down the swelling in my face. Told me to go to GP if not any better in a few days. I also went to the dentist once I could open my mouth again and was told that I’m grinding my teeth at night so got a gum shield.
I do too but when mentioned to my doctor I simply get a blank stare. If anyone has any idea please let us know!
Make sure you don't have Trigeminal Neuralgia. It probably isn't, but just in case I'll describe it as best I can.
It does all sorts of things with sensations, most usualy on one side, but can be both. Sometimes mine mimics jaw pain, sometimes eye pain, sometimes tooth ache, sometimes it sets off running nose and sinuses, sometimes pain just in front of my ear. It is a bit of a chamelion of different sensations too, hot patches, numb patches, cold patches, hot sensitivity, cold sensitivity, touch sensative, usually felt as electic shocks, twingling sensations that spread and move about on my face, throbbing, surges of pain, fireworks in my face, you name it... if it's unpleasant it can do it. Neural blockers like Tegretol help, but are best in a combination of low dose drugs, mine are: amitriptolin as a muscle relaxant etc. co-codemol or similar and Tegretol. It's better to tackle it with a mix of drugs at lower doses than try to beat it with a single drug at a very high dose. A mix of drugs lowers the risk of serious dependencies and tollerence problems building up, as well as being more effective. I was on Morphine for a while after I had a seriouse operation. It
fixed the operation pain completely, but the trigeminal neuralgia lived on untoached by the effects of the drug. In emergencies, when it seems out of controle a sedative like diazipam can help too. Don't dismiss the use of hot (red) Tigger Balm, and clove oil inside the mouth in emergencies. It has the strange effect of spreading the pain out with the heating and stinging, but making it less intense in any one place - I've no idea how it works but it does, and is great while you wait for tablets to work.
I hope its not the Trigeminal thing - but you know what to look out for and how it is best dealt with now just in case.
Love Dinahdabble.
Hi. You can google some exercises on youtube. TMJ =Temporal Mentibula Joint. You have to be very gentle with this joint and sorry but chewing gum is a big NoNo. I suffer from this and do the exercises as soon as I feel it coming on.
Hi, I have TMJ (or TMD) - Saw Doc who referred me and ended up with exercises and night guard. This causes (jaw locking as you described). It then decided to go left as well which causes the above/sharp ear pain/aching gums/tooth nerve pain. I have to eat mushy stuff!
I also had jaw ache and ended up in hospital being clot busted as an emergency.
Don't take any risks with your life - it's better to be alive and have tmj/d than have a pe or stroke or heart attack.
